Highland takes key road win from Potosi

Football players wait for that special moment or that special game that defines themselves and for Highland sophomore Drew Hennessy that happened last Friday.
It started with his first punt that Highland coach Mike Aide called "unbelievable!"
Hennessey was in his own end zone on fourth down on Highland"s first possession.
"My first thought was that Potosi would get the ball in great field position," Aide said.
But Hennessey did not let that happen.
He kicked it long and deep, taking away the cherished field position the Chieftains wanted.
Aide credits assistant coach Arik Kosharek with helping Hennessey with his role on special teams.
"With Arik helping him become a better kicker, we become a better team," said Aide.
But Hennessey's dream night didn't stop there.
On offense the Cardinal back ran for three touchdowns, caught a scoring pass and a pair of two point conversions to help Highland crush Potosi 43-22. He also kicked a pair of extra points.
On defense he recovered a fumble and took it 58 yards to score and also had 18 tackles. Six of his stops were solo and one was for a loss.
"Defensively Drew is a ball hawk," Aide said. "He takes his game to the next level on defense and with him at middle linebacker we are able to put pressure on our opponent."
Hennessey had three carries for 51 yards, a 17 yard per carry average. He scored on runs of 24 and 58.
He was also the leading receiver, catching four of JR Linscheid's five passes for 50 yards and two scores. He caught one touchdown pass from 24 yards out and two conversions.
"Drew can line up anywhere on the field and make an impact," Aide said. "He can go into the slot or be in the backfield. He helps block for JR and Adam Wolfe. And he is a threat in our passing game which helps our receivers."
"With Drew and JR on the team you never know who is going to step up," said Aide. "They are a great combo. Tonight just happened to be Drew's night and he played a great game."
Linscheid was the key to a great start for the Cardinals with a first quarter one yard scoring plunge. He also took the Cards down the field in the second quarter and stepped in again from the one.
"John Ross did a great job on offense," Aide said. "He made some great reads which let Drew and Adam make some big gains. Our offensive line did a great job protecting him and letting him get important passes off. When JR gets into open space he is difficult to contain and he can turn small gains into big ones."
Linscheid ran for 98 yards on 21 carries and threw for 50 more. Wolfe gained 65 yards on 21 tries.
Helping stack up the Chieftains were the Drury brothers, Bray and Drew.
"They played unbelievable defensive games," Aide said ot the Drurys. "They have been very consistent and have helped in so many ways. Bray made some hugh plays at defensive back and stopped drives by being aggressive. He did not allow the receiver to get his hands on the ball and at times ripped it right out of their hands. He has a motor that doesn't stop and lifts us to another level when he is out there."
"Bray has impressed me this year and he will continue to get better as the season goes on," Aide said.
"They worked so hard this summer and it shows," Aide added about the Drurys. "Our defensive line of Drew Drury, Ryan Minter, Ben Aide and Derek Miller have played great together and raise havoc for the opposing quarterback"
A win over Potosi is a big key for a team seeking respect and aiming at a championship along with a playoff berth and it has helped the Cardinals make an early season statement.
"Potosi has a great team and is always near the top," Aide said. "I know coach Siegert will get them on track, finish strong and make the play-offs. This is a big win for us and to win on the road at Potosi is unheard of. And to win like we did is pretty sweet."
Aide feels the win is a big confidence booster for the Cardinals.
"Last year we were 1-4 on the road so to get a win like that helps our confidence. I couldn't be more proud of my team and staff for the win. We played with confidence and really turned it on the second half."
It won't get any easier for the Cardinals this week as they host Division 7 leader Bangor in a non-conference game Saturday at 2 p.m.
"We lost 38-0 to them last year," Aide said.  "It will be Parents Night and we will welcome back Jordan Laufenberg, a former Highland athlete, will be returning to his alma mater as a Bangor assistant."
"We have a ton of work to do for this game," Aide continued. "We need a great week of practice and preparation. Bangor has a great team and we are excited to get a chance to play them."
