Dodge-Point boys, girls both win at Darlington


Dodgeville-Mineral Point's cross country teams passed their first big invitational test with flying colors Saturday.
The boys varsity took care of a tough Darlington squad 44-56 with the jayvee almost perfect scoring the field.
The girls beat out Darlington on a tie breaker with both teams totaling 62 after the first five runners had crossed the finishline.
Freshman Henry Keith was the third individual runner to finish. He turned in a time of 17:26 with junior Juan Navarro 11 seconds behind him in fourth.
Junior Isaac Grunow was ninth in 17:55 while senior Tanner Cullen took 11th in 18:01.
Junior Gerrit Bakker was 17th in 18:24 to round out the scorers. Juniors Brantly Eastman and Jordan May were the other two runners. Eastman was 18th in 18:37 while May took 24th in 19:00.
Wisconsin Heights/Barneveld senior Lucas Caminiti was the meet winner in 17:01 with Darlington sophomore Payton Heinberg next in 17:14.
The rest of the team scores were: Albany 115, Beaver Dam 119, Mount Horeb 166, Southwest-ern/Benton/Cuba City 168, Lancaster 169, Wisconsin Heights/Barneveld 174, Richland Center/Ithaca 290, Belleville 305, Riverdale 309, Iowa-Grant/ Highland 314, Holy Family 359, Fennimore 381, Pecatonic-a/Argyle 420, North Crawford 454.
Results for I-G/Highland were: William McLeer 20th in 18:51, East on Dobson 52nd in 20:14, Paul Connolly 69th in 21:09, Jesse Buroker 82nd in 22:50, Ethan Rundell 91st in 23:42 and Sawyer Dobson 92nd in 23:50.
The D-P JV won with 16 points to Darlington's 69.
Adam Phillips, Dylan MGraw, Declan McGraw and John Phelan took the meet's top four places with times of 19:01, 19:07, 19:29 and 19:32.
Luke Davis was sixth in 20:10 to round out the scoring.
The rest of their finishes were: David Nagel 7th in 20:10, Clay Venden 8th in 20:25, Will Borne-Mumm 9th in 20:26, John Davis 13th in 20:58, Conner Trocke 18th in 21:38, Gabe Hart 21st in 21;55, Grant Lawton 24th in 21:59, Nathan Grunow 25th in 22:01, Kevin Eisenzimmer 30th in 22:20, Will Kramer 33rd in 22:31, Owen Miller 37th in 22:54, Riley Hall 47th in 23:19, Dylan Roen 67th in 24:36, Devine Brisco 68th in 24:36, Gavin Byers 69th in 24:45, Brandon Molldrem 70th in 24:47, Tate Jewell 79th in 27:51.
Other team scores were: Mount Horeb 85, Tri State Homeschool 107, Beaver Dam 137, Cashton 140, Fennimore 188.
The girls squad was also paced by a freshman as Korra Wasley finished 6th overall in 21:02.
Next came senior Mackenzie Hall 12th in 21:49, senior Claire Baldus 13th in 21:52, sophomore Hannah Tremelling 15th in 21:59 and sophomore Lindsay Johnson 16th in 21:59 for ther 62 total.
It was sophomore Josie Jabs, who finished 21st in 22:17 that broke the tie with Darlington as their sixth runner finished 45th.
The other Dodge-Point varsity runner was sophomore Avery Peterson, who was 51st in 24:24.
Belleville senior Noelle Marie, who will be a familiar name at the top of a lot of meets this year, won the event in 19:29. Lancaster sophomore Lydia Murphy was runner-up im 20:02.
The other team scores were Beaver Dam 94, Albany 101, Lancaster 123, Mount Horeb 135, Prairie du Chien 171, Wisconsin Heights/Barneveld 220, Belleville 261, Richland Center/Ithaca 262, Cashton 287, Fennimore 293, North Crawford 314.
Dodge-Point's JV team had the top three runners on the day and won 32-57 over Lancaster.
Sophomores Cassie McGraw and Sydney Judd went 1-2 in 22:32 and 23:42 with junior Haley May third in 23:47.
Senior Alyssa Sullivan took 10th in 25:22 while freshman Breanna Pearson was 16th in 25:59 for their total.
Their other finishes were Abby Thompson 18th in 25:29, Macy Ahrens 32nd in 28:11, Rachel McGauley 63rd in 30:40, Emma Webb 86th in 38:23.
The rest of the team scores were: Beaver Dam 76, Darlington 91, Mount Horeb 121, Belleville 134.
Finishes for Iowa-Grant/High-land were: junior Jamie Dilley 50th in 28:43, senior Julia Cockroft 60th in 30:11, sophomore Hannah McCracken 80th in 34:43.
Dodge-Point had two boys run in the Junior High 1.3 mile race.
Dylan Wasley finished 7th in 7:53 while Haakon Peterson was 21st in 8:35.
Dodge-Point coach Denny McGraw had these comments about the meet: "It was a beautiful day, perfect weather and the Dodge Point Country team started out the season with a sweep - all four teams placed first. This is the first time that all four teams have won at the Darlington Invite. It is a competitive field with teams like Darlington, Beaver Dam, Albany, Lancaster, Mt. Horeb to name a few. It is early in the season, but what a great way to start.
Varsity girls tied with Darlington, but our sixth runner broke the tie, giving DPCC varsity girls the victory. We had five girls in the top sixteen.
Freshmen Korra Wasley lead the way with a sixth place finish, a great start for a freshmen and her first invitational.
Mackenzie Hall and Claire Baldus ran side by side to finish 12th and 13th. These two seniors are showing good leadership as they work together for the team.
Hannah Tremelling and Lindsey Johnson finished 15th and 16th. These sophomores worked hard over the summer to improve.
Josie Jabs was the sixth runner for the tie-breaker to help the team win over Darlington.
Avery Peterson rounded out the varsity squad finishing 51st.
JV girls were led by Cassie McGraw who won the JV girls race by over a minutes. It was so exciting to see three DPCC girls come in the top spots in this race.
Varsity boys beat Darlington by 12 points. The boys have not won in Darlington for many years because they had to compete again the Redbirds who have been 5 time state champions in Division 3. It was an exciting race to watch.
Freshmen Henry Keith and Junior Juan Navarro ran side by side, pushing each other the entire race, with Henry edging out Juan to finish 3rd and 4th.
Isaac Grunow and Tanner Cullen also teamed up and ran together to finish 9th and 11th. This type of team work seemed to work well for a victory.
Gerrit Bakker and Brantley Eastman, in their first ever high school CC invitational, finished 17th and 18th, to help the boys to a solid win.
Rounding out the varsity was Jordan May finishing 24th.
JV boys won the Darlington Invite for the first time that anyone can remember. We have a very solid team that are really pushing each other to help everyone improve. Adam Phillips won the JV race and was followed by 3 other DPCC runners to have the top four tops. The team scored a very low 16 points in their victory.
