Historic night for Pointer volleyball in title quest

Thursday night was a big night in Mineral Point...a night to make history.
The history assignment began with the Pointer volleyball team hosting SWAL power Cuba City, a team the team had to defeat to continue their quest for a conference title.
Consider it done.
The Pointers split in the first two sets, 15-25, 25-19 then put the Cubans away 25-22, 25-18.
"The last time Mineral Point beat Cuba City was back in 2003," coach Nicole Henke said.
Earlier in the season the Pointers lost to the Cubans when they were down a starter due to concussive symptoms and they had to come up with some creative line-up changes. On Thursday night, the Pointer girls came full force with a one track mind and that was to win, Henke said.
"In set one the girls came out a bit too fired up and made some errors they haven't done much of the season, so Cuba was able to get that win," the coach added. "In sets two, three and four, the girls played more relaxed allowing them to stay above the Cubans to take the win," Henke added.
Sydney Staver led the Pointers with 10 kills, four blocks, 20 assists and three aces.
Malorie Johnson added eight kills and Haley Chubb three blocks.
Destinee Kruser had four aces and six digs.
Elise Ames was the digs leader with 11.
"One of the our goals this season was to win conference, and this win takes us one step closer to this goal," Henke said. Thursday's match will be the last SWAL test for the Pointers when they travel to Southwestern to finish out the conference.
