Pointers pummel Dodgers in opener

Mineral Point's defending Division 3 Girls State Basketball Champions, flexed their 2016-17 muscles in their season opener Friday night with a 78-40 win over visiting Dodgeville in a non-conference battle.
It was also a first time out for the Dodgers, who are playing without a senior on the team.
The Pointers held a 15-6 lead early and then substituted handily the rest of the way.
The Dodgers also substituted regularly, working with different combinations.
Junior reserve forward Malorie Johnson had a double double in her first varsity game with 15 points and 10 rebounds. She had a very balanced scoring night with seven in the first half and eight in the second.
Senior guard Syd Staver also hit 15 points with 10 coming in the second half.
McKenna Reichling added 14 points as all 10 Pointers scored on the night.
Dodgeville junior guard Hannah Jones hit 20 points that included her nailing 10 of 12 from the free throw line.
Mineral Point coasted to a 44-27 lead by halftime and then held the Dodgers to just 13 points in the second half.
"I was very happy with the start of the game, creating turnovers and finishing in transition," said Mineral Point coach Mitch Wainwright. "It was also nice to have a chance for everyone to play and score."
He added, "Haley Chubb, Destinee Kruser and Malorie Johnson all had 10 rebounds, with Malorie recording a double-double in her first varsity game. McKenna Reichling also had a good night with 14 points, 6 steals and 7 assists. It was a great team effort and win to get the season started."
