Barneveld's girls basketball team had to enter the land of the giants in their home non-conference opener with Oregon Tuesday.
With three girls 6-0 or taller available for action for the Panthers the Golden Eagles had to battle both the size advantage and a cold night from beyond the arc. The Eagles were three for 16 on three point attempts.
"We will be a better three point shooting team than that," said Eagles coach Doug Pickarts.
The Eagles started out with a 10-5 lead then saw the Panthers from the Badger South conference score a dozen unanswered points. The battle was uphill the rest of the way with the lead rising to 12 in the second half.
Katie Uhl, a 5-9 senior guard and 6-2 junior Ellen McCorkle had 13 and 11 points to lead the Panthers. 6-0 sophomore Sydona Roberts added eight.
"We had to pick our poison and decided to go after their size," Pickarts said. "But Uhl hit two threes the second half and scored eight of her points."
McCorkle also had eight second half points.
Mia Whitish, a four year starter for the Eagles, had 16 points and was perfect from the free throw line with an eight for eight performance. She also had a pair of three pointers.
Junior Courtney Skaife also got into double figures with 10.
The Eagles had a good night at the free throw line, making 12 of 13.
The Eagles are off until Tuesday when they face Lancaster from the SWC in another non-conference game. The contest will be played at Lancaster.
