Along the Ad Routes

It was another very strange weekend weather-wise. Saturday morning I
went to the Upland Garden Club's annual plant sale at Harris Park at 8:00
a.m. There were people lined up outside (in about 36 degree weather) waiting
for the doors to open promptly at 8:00. They sure bustled inside as fast as
they could when those doors opened. It was pretty chilly even inside Ley
Pavilion. I was wondering if the plants would survive the time they would
be inside before closing time! People were dressed in gloves and mittens and
in pretty much their "winter" garb!

I had to leave the plant sale and head to Dodge Point Country Club as the
SWAL and SWC conferences were holding a golf challenge starting at 8:30.
By the time I arrived at the starting hole (#1) I had missed the first group.
When the second group was teeing off, it began to snow - YES SNOW! That
went on for a group or two, then it turned to sleet. I'm not sure what the temperature
had risen to - maybe 37 degrees! Anyway that was the end of me
going to any more outside activities that day. It took me the rest of the morning
- from 10:15 on - to warm up even though I was in my winter coat - the
one I pretty much had worn all winter!

Sunday, it wasn't much better even though the temperature showed it was
warmer - mid to upper 50s and maybe hit 60. The wind was one of those
"raw" kinds and went right through you when the sun went under the clouds.
I was inside the concession stand at Centennial Park since there was a home
talent game being played. I couldn't figure out why coffee and hot chocolate
was something people wanted over gatorade or soda! It was a good thing that
Roseanne Rossing came to sing the National Anthem because she stayed and
helped me in the stand and there were times I surely couldn't handle it alone!
Jeff "Potsie" Weber threw out the first ball of the "home" season. He not only
is a Dodgeville City Council representative, but he is the Piggly Wiggly store
manager and helps us (as well as many other groups) with supplies for our
concession stands. Check out his follow thru above as he tossed the ball to
the catcher in throwing out the first pitch!

The colleges, trade schools and universities have pretty much held graduations
at this point. Now Highland will be the first area high school to graduate
this Saturday. Pecatonica, Mineral Point and Iowa-Grant graduate the
following Friday night with Dodgeville's Sunday, May 29. Barneveld will
graduate on Saturday, June 4 - a very busy time around the area!

It's time for make-up baseball, softball, soccer, track, and whatever games
to take place this next week as the conference meet and regional games are
right around the corner - with some going on this week!

Nick and Mindy at the Dodger Bowl have opened a Pavilion Bar that will
be used for outside events. They picked a weekend that could've been warmer
though!
