Busy week for Panther softball


Maranda McCarthy helped her own cause with a huge day at the plate as Iowa-Grant handled Boscobel 7-4 in a recent SWAL game.
McCarthy was 3x3 with a double and three runs scored to pace the nine hit Panther attack. Hannah Stevens was 2x3 for Iowa-Grant with a home run.
Malery Peat also got into the hitting action with a 2x3 day and a run scored.
Kristin Bingham also had a big rbi day with a two run triple in the fifth.
Stevens homered in the first for a 1-0 Panther league.
McCarthy doubled in the second and scored on an error.
She then singled in the fourth and advanced on Bingham's bunt. Lexi Busse then singled to load the bases. Peat's squeeze bunt sent in McCarthy and an error sent in the second run of the frame.
Bingham's triple got in a pair of runs in the fifth.
The Panthers finished their scoring with a run in the sixth. Peat singled, advanced on an error and scored on an error on Katie Olson's grounder.
McCarthy fanned six and walked five in her complete game win.
"This was one of the best defensive games we've played," said coach Deanna Fulton. "Maranda kept us in it and gave us a chance to win."
The Panthers lost to Southwestern in another SWAL game last week win the bottom of the seventh. Final score was 3-2.
They beat Prairie du Chien 14-7 Friday in a non-conference game.
Bingham had a pair of home runs and seven rbis in the win.
Emma Liddicoat threw out three runners stealing and made a diving catch of a foul ball with runners on.
The Panthers also faced Riverdale's Amanda Meister on a day when her ball was moving.
Meister limited the Panthers to one hit, a double by Katie Olson, as the Chieftains took a 2-0 win in a SWAL game Monday. She fanned nine in her complete game.
McCarthy went the distance for Iowa-Grant. She limited Riverdale to three hits while striking out three.
Tuesday the Panthers turned back Barneveld 6-5 in a non-conference game
McCarthy went all seven, fanned four and did not walk a batter. She surrendered 10 hits with only one of the runs off her earned.
Mattie Schave had a complete game effort for the Eagles. She spaced seven hits, striking out one and walking three. Four of the runs were earned.
The Panthers scored four in the first and two in the third which held up for the win.
Emma Liddicoat walked, advanced when Stevens reached on an error and scored on McCarthy's rbi double. With two outs and Liddicoat's courtesy runner on third, Jess Pluemer, Peat walked and when she stole second, Pluemer scored. Before the inning was over Bingham had an rbi single and Lexi Busse an rbi base hit.
Liddicoat singled to open the third, Stevens singled and both runners advanced on a wild pitch.  Liddicoat scored on a wild pitch and Bingham's fielders choice scored Stevens.
Barneveld got a run in the third when Jamie Kelly and Kayleigh Leahy singled and Natalie Elfering singled for the first run of the game for the Eagles.
Elfering singled with the bases loaded for a run in the fifth.
The Eagles made a run in the seventh but came up short. Leahy and Taylor Owens reached and moved up with stolen bases. Jessica Walker and Elfering had back to back fielders choices. Brooklyn Hogan-Weier doubled to load the bases and Teegan Pickerts made it a one run game with a single.
But the Eagles were retired with no further damage.
The Panthers host Darlington Thursday.
