A person who will be missed

By J. Patrick Reilly-preilly@thedodgevillechronicle.com

It would be hard o find a subject that the late Judge Bill Dyke knew nothing or little about. Start a conversation about anything and he would be able to join the discussion.
One of the things I will remember most about "his honor" as I frequently called him when I ran into him in the Iowa County Courthouse or at Upland Hills where he walked the halls to keep fit is that he knew my love of baseball. He would ask about the upcoming season or the one that was underway or the one that was just finished.
The best thing about that was he was truley interested.
But then Bill Dyke was interested in all that is good in the world as it was his quest to make it even better.
I was a frequent visitor in his courtroom when major trials or hearings took place. I could listen to testimoney for days and know all along that the trial would be run fairly and efficently.
If someone needed a chance and deserved it, that person would get it from Judge Dyke. He had that sense about him that not everything was bad in someone and he would go out of his way to find the good.
From tv personality to mayor of Madison to a run for governor and also vice president Bill Dyke was always up to something with a desire to improve things for everyone. He succeeded in doing that with Teen Court and a mediation program that would keep people in their homes. He truly cared about people.
Twice I asked him to speak to the teams who came here from the Ohio Valley Babe Ruth Region to play for a berth in the World Series. He welcomed the players and made them feel that being here was important. He threw out the first pitch and he also attended some of the games.
Baseball is the only game with the object of getting home.
Bill is home now. Rest in Peace my friend.
