Strong SWAL season helps Pointers prepare

Turns out the only nervousness Mineral Point girls basketball coach Mitch Wainwright had to worry about as the Pointers matched up with Eau Claire Regis for the WIAA D4 state semifinal game was his own.
"I'm the one who gets nervous," the veteran coach said. "The girls just go about their business and get the job done. Me, I'm a basket case."
What the Pointer girls learned from going through a tough SWAL championship season is that doing battle in that league prepares you for what other teams throw at you.
"In the SWAL you survive," he said. "We don't shy away from teams because when you play in the SWAL you will be ready."
Wainwright admits the girls help the nerves go away with their approach.
"They go out and attack," Wainwright said. "Once they get on the court I know it is time to get rid of the nerves and coach."
Four players in double figures helps the calm settle in, especially if one of them plays a key role off the bench.
That would be McKenzie Schmitz who accounted for 10 points, five rebounds, an assist and a steal off the bench.
That gave support to Jessica Schultz who had a 16 point, 12 rebound double double for the Pointers, Clara Chambers who had 19 points, eight rebounds and four steals and Sydney Staver who scored 16 points with an assist and two steals.
The Pointers got untracked midway through the first half and led 40-27 at intermission. They outscored the Ramblers 37-29 the second half.
"Our inside game was working tonight," Chambers said. "We decided to keep doing that until something changed."
Nothing really did.
Schultz said she had the answer for the Pointers going after the gold ball the next night.
"We just have to play Mineral Point basketball, like we did tonight," she said.
