Dodgeville junior Kara Crowley and Richland Center sophomore Madison Risner matched each other point for point with 25 each, but the Lady Hornets came away with a 59-55 win to claim a D2 regional semifinal girls basketball contest Friday night.
Risner scored 21 of her points in the second half and went 6x6 from the line at the end.
What realy hurt was when RC's Cassidy Whitney hit a trio of three poniters in the first half to keep her team close.
The game was tied at 25 at halftime, but the Hornets made their free throws down the stretch to secure the win. They sank all 14 on the night.
"Credit them, they made their free throws," said Dodger coach Mark Dooley. "When we played them twice earlier in the season they didn't shoot that well from the line."
Richland Center's Brooklyn Liegel hit four three pointers on the night and finished with 14 points as the other Hornet in double figures.
The Dodgers also had Hannah Jones hit 11 points and Megan Pluemer 10.
The girls played a great game," Dooley added. "We gave up too many offensive rebounds in the second half and Risner was the beneficiary of a lot of them. And we couldn't put the ball in the basket for a stretch in the second half. We had good shots, they just wouldn't fall."
"We had contributions by everybody," the coach said talking about his players. "Kara had an outstanding night and Hannah a good night. Ellie guarded everybody from a guard to a forward to a post. Megan played well and worked very hard out there. Katie hit two big threes. Cassara played a steady defensive game and had several deflecitons. Brooke did a good job off the bench on Peterson in the post and Alexis hit a bucket and played great defense plus rebounded well."
"I'm goning to miss the three seniors (Katie, Megan, Alexis) that I've had for three years. Also, Alicia Benson came out for the first time this season as a senior and improved tremendously."
