History in the making as Dodge-Point gymnastics team head to D2 state meet

In coach Julia Oellerich's estimation the second state tournament berth out of the WIAA Division 2 Baraboo Sectional would either be Dodge-Point or River Valley.
"River Valley put up some big scores in Caroline Iausly and Claire Eno, so we knew that we needed to pick it up or we were going to come up short," Oellerich said.
The teams waited anxiously for the final results to be totaled and when they were announced Dodge-Point will be making its first ever trip to state as a team and will be competing at Wisconsin Rapids tomorrow.
"When they called our name for second place, it was absolutely surreal," Oellerich said. "To see that all of our hard work throughout the season had paid off was so gratifying."
It wasn't an easy start for the Dodge-Pointers.
"We had beam in the first round which is always challenging because it is the event that is most affected by our nerves," said Oellerich. "We had a few solid routines from Lauren May and Alyssa Belling. Lauren had a no fall routine and nailed her back tuck, which scored her an 8.4 and allowed her to place third to advance to State. She also advanced on floor, vault, bars, and in the All Around competition. Alyssa also had a great beam routine. Even though she fell on her back handspring the rest of her routine was solid. She scored an 8.025 and took fifth place on beam to advance to State."
After that the Dodge-Point squad knew they had to finish ahead of the Blackhawks.
"We knew that we would be in contention to finish in one of the top two spots, which would allow us to continue to State, but without Tori Palzkill (see other story), we had to hit every routine," Oellerich said. "After our performance on beam, we knew that we needed to band together and make every single tenth of a point count. Katlyn Yingst led us off on floor and had a near perfect routine, and achieved a personal best. You could see a fire being lit in each one of the girls after that, and we finished the rest of the meet strong, seeing personal bests from Sasha Paiva, Claire Polinag and Ana Peterson on various events. Marissa Parkin competed a new vault which also helped us achieve one of our highest scoring team vault scores of the season."
Oellerich admires the work ethic the Dodge-Point squad has shown this season.
"This is a great group of girls and they deserved to make history," she said. "They deserve to be the first team from Dodge-Point gymnastics to go to State as a team!"
