A tragic loss

That was one of the statements that the late Tennessee Women's Basketball Coach, Pat Summit, said frequently throughout her life.
She not only said it. She lived it.
Her reocords are legendary---several NCAA Division 1 titles, a 39-0 record for a perfect season and a 1098-208 record for her career.
She coached at Tennessee for 38 years.
Alzheimer's disease was diagnosed in 2011 and eventually claimed her life Tuesday morning.
Many people have coached at one level or another but few did as much for "the game" as Pat Summit. She was a role model for young coaches and a true spokesperson for women's athletics.
Pat Summit stressed to female players that the playgrounds belonged to them too.
As one coach said today, "There were two people I studied during my basketball coaching career....Pat Summit and Coach K. I think I will read a book she wrote today."
She will be missed.
After being diagnosed with dementia she created the Pat Summit Foundation with all money raised to fight the disease.
Alzheimers is affecting too many people. Whatever can be done to fight it should be on everyone's list of priorities.
