Catholic Central stops Barneveld in 5


"They are by far the best team we've faced this season," were the words of Barneveld baseball coach Lance Schmitz following their regional championship game Wednesday.
He was referring to Burlngton Catholic Central after they took care of the Golden Eagles 12-0 in five innings.
They scored in every inning, plating three in each the first, second and fourth, added two in the third and one in the fifth on 10 hits.
Senior hurler Brandon Vandehei went five innings and allowed just three hits with striking out eight and walking two.
Catholic Central's Ian Aldrich, James Kreskein and Connnor Wegge had two runs batted in each with Luke Haligethal, Frankie Kechnke. Charles Robinson and Owen Dirksmeyer driving in one run each.
The roof began caving in during the first inning for the Eacles with a passed ball and an error helping the cause.
They scored htree more times in the second with one being on a bases loaded walk.
Barneveld hits came as one each from Sam Shatrawka, Jacob Slaney and Caleb Behnke.
Shatrawka worked 3 2/3 frames for Barneveld. He allowed 11 runs (7 earned) on 10 hits while striking out two and walking four.
Will Clausen finished with one strikeout and one walk while allowing an unearned run and no hits.
The Eagles best cance to score came in the second frame when Trevor Siegenthaler walked to lead off the inning. He went to second on a wild pitch, but was left stranded at third after a ground out and a pair of strikeouts.
"We got off to a rough start and never recovered," Schmitz pointed out.
