here in Dodgeville and it did. It didn't close its doors or anything like that -
it just BLEW IT last Friday on "National Donut Day"! You'd think that a
holiday like that which began in 1938 they would remember year after year.
I don't know for sure what time they RAN OUT OF DONUTS, but that's exactly
what happened. I know my late buddy Mikey wouldn't have made that
mistake, but you know the "younger" generation! I guess they tried to appease
people with bismarks or something like that, but after all it was National
DONUT Day!

I was going to make a call to Crubaugh brother Joe in Stoughton to see if
he was "smarter" than his older brother Brian at his bakery, but I didn't want
to start a family feud"!

And just to be a HELP to Brian and company in the future -There are three
other doughnut holidays, the origins of which are obscure. International Jelly-
Filled Doughnut Day is widely recognized as June 8 (occasionally as June
9). National Cream-Filled Doughnut Day is celebrated on September 14. Buy
a Doughnut Day occurs on October 30.

And if he wants to do it up right, National Donut Day was established for
the soldiers in WWI (before 1938) as women of the Salvation Army served
donuts, pies, etc to the soldiers and they were known as "Donut Girls" - the
bakery could provide girls dressed like that on those holidays!

I was accused of "whining" last week in my column about "holidays" not
being holidays for me. I did survive Memorial Day okay, but it gets to be
more of a challenge each year, with all the runnings as I get older!

Saturday turned out to be a great day for the Iowa County Dairy Breakfast
held at the Thompson Farm just outside of Barneveld. I had a chance to meet
up with quite a few people I probably hadn't seen since the last dairy breakfast.
The food seems to get better each year - or maybe it is just that I only
get that good of food once a year! The above photo is what it is all about -
dairy cattle!

Here's my little driving story for this week. I was headed towards Mineral
Point and passed a "Medical Transport" vehicle. Soon it passed me and then
pulled over into my lane in front of me. All of a sudden the driver slammed
on the brakes and veered into the left lane. I was going around 70 and almost
couldn't slow down fast enough to avoid hitting it. I guess the driver must've
figured out they needed to get back into the left lane to make a turn off the
four lane to head to their final destination. Wouldn't you think a vehicle such
as that would be equipped with a GPS or at least with specific directions?
That would've been something if I had collided with a "Medical Transport"
vehicle!
