Along the Ad Routes

By Mike Reilly-mreilly@thedodgevillechronicle.com

It was quite a Saturday for me as far as events go. First I witnessed a marriage
proposal at the Dodgeville Fire Department by Nate Stangel to (his now
fiancee) Maria. It was quite the spectacle - complete with fire trucks, firefighters,
some friends and family and a somewhat "false" way of getting
Maria there.

My only thought about that whole marriage thing was it is better him than
me!

Then I spent almost the rest of the afternoon at Barneveld High School at
their "More Than a Game" fundraiser to help with cancer prevention. This is
the 8th year the school has done this day up big to raise funds to help with
prevention of that dreaded disease. There were special food sales, face painting,
garment sales, raffles and more. Oh, and there were boys and girls basketball
games with Prairie du Chien. On the varsity level, the Prairie boys
won by two points while the Barneveld girls won by four points - each great
games!
*****
At Barneveld, it also was a day that Jimmy Myers got to present a basketball
to his son Matthew, a junior - as he reached 1000 points. And Jimmy
was honored as he concluded his tenure as Barneveld girls basketball coach
last year to take over as boys coach. He had no idea that it was happening
and was almost speechless as a lot of his former players came out to greet
him on the court and posed for a photo afterwards (see above).
*****
I had Sunday brunch with former neighbors Jack and Dorothy Weirich at
the Red Room. Jack will be 98 in a couple of weeks. He and Dorothy are
very good friends as is their son - John.

I watched the ending of the NFC championship playoff game Sunday with
the Denver Broncos and the New England Patriots. I don't really like either
team or their quarterbacks, but I guess I would have rather seen Denver beat
the Patriots as it seems New England is always in the Super Bowl. That's the
way it worked out, but then I heard that now both teams have been to the
Super Bowl 8 times!
*****
This coming Sunday - always the one between the NFC and AFC championship
games - is the annual Highland Lions Club's Fisheree at Blackhawk
Lake. The temperatures are supposed to be above freezing with some 40s
from Thursday through Sunday - but there is plenty of ice out there!
*****
I was reminded of the fisheree Saturday when Bob and Terry and myself
went to Grandma's Kitchen in Highland as our weekly Saturday breakfast
stop. We had Shyann Dailey wait on us. She is a Highland graduate and a
very friendly person and does a good job as wait staff!

There are several elections coming up in the February primary - the big one
in our area will be for Circuit Court Judge where we have four candidates to
choose from. Those are: Tim Angel and Tim McKinley both of Dodgeville
and Margaret (Peg) Koehler and Larry Nelson both of Mineral Point. DON'T
FORGET TO VOTE!
