Along the Ad Routes

By Mike Reilly-mreilly@thedodgevillechronicle.com

We received a long note from nearly 100 year old Rose Martin of Blue
River along with her renewal. She says: "Dodgeville Chronicle- Time again
to order the Chronicle in 2016. I was born March 17, 1916 nearly 100 years
ago at my house in Mifflin, WI. My parents were Robert and Elizabeth Jinkins
Johnston. I was number 8 of 10 children. Now, nearly 100 years later, I'm
still keeping house alone. God has blessed me. I always enjoyed Kate Smith's
Mifflin News but we haven't had her for many, many years. I enjoy the Lost
Grove News and Rewey News, but I don't know the people. I have outlasted
all those that used to live there. Even though I'll be 100 March 17 this year,
Keep the Chronicle coming." She has been a faithful subscriber for a LONG
time!

Another note came from Carol Ramsden of Highland saying: "Enclosed is
the amount for the subscription for another year. I truly enjoy your paper, especially
the stories by Pat!"

I joined the Power Ball Mania last week in pursuit of the $1.5 Billion. Like
a great many of the players, I didn't win the big prize or any of the smaller
bigger prizes, but I did win my money back as I had the Power Ball on one
of two draws - so different from a good share of the players, I won and didn't
lose!

Ron Dentinger, former Dodgeville Chamber of Commerce Executive Director
and professional MC/comedian, posted this little tidbit on FACEBOOK
about Don Quinn. Don was the founder of the Don Q Inn Motel and Restaurant.
He was a good friend and business associate. He had one of my uncle's
broken wooden propellors hanging above the entry way of one of the dining
rooms.
While the Dodgeville Airport was still a gravel strip, Don Quinn used to
fly a DC-6 in and out of there. He parked the 4-engine airliner by his home
like a salesman might park a company car. He was the pilot for Javlin LTD,
a job that took him all over the world. Prior to that he flew for United Airlines
and he was a P-38 pilot in World War Two.
It's my belief that Don Quinn inadvertently did more for the Dodgeville
area than other area promoters did on purpose. The Don Q Inn was a front
page story in the Chicago Tribune. It was featured in both Look and Life
Magazine and The Detroit Free Press. There was also a story in the San Francisco
Examiner and The Minneapolis Star Tribune and others...

The Thrill of Victory - The Agony of Defeat! The Wisconsin area, on a National
scene, experienced both this weekend.
First, the Green Bay Packers pulled something out of their hat to even tie
the game with Arizona at the end of regulation only to lose in overtime. It
was a game they weren't supposed to win and in the end they didn't - but
they probably should have. They should've scored a touchdown in at least
one of their field goal ending possessions in the first half. Near the end of
the regulation game they came up with a big defensive play on a knocked
down pass in the end zone only to have it go into another Cardinal receiver's
hands for a TD. They didn't get an obvious pass interference call on their
next to last possession. The first coin toss try got "muffed". And, in the end,
they lost Arizona's Larry Fitzgerald and the game! Sometimes you wonder
if the fact that Las Vegas has Arizona picked to win the Super Bowl has anything
to do with anything!
BUT, the Thrill of Victory came on Sunday when our own Cobb's Greg
Gard and the Wisconsin Badgers Men's basketball team took down #4 Michigan
State with some late game heroics by Bronson Koenig and Ethan Happ
- a three and a two. They had control of the game a lot of the time - especially
after they started to really put things together late in the first half. It was a
fun one to watch and they finally came out on top of a close game! Gard
looks like a great coach and he sounded like one after the game. The Badgers
don't want to lose him!
