Pointers withstand Riverdale's 3s

It didn't come easy, but Mineral Point's girls basketball team kept its SWAL unbeaten streak going Thursday night with a 76-65 win over a pesky Riverdale team.
The Pointers led most of the first half, but an Amanda Meister three gave the Lady Chieftains their first lead at the 7:21 mark. They pushed that lead to 32-22 before a 10-0 run by the Pointers tied things at 34 at the half.
"We were more aggressive on defense which limited their shot opportunities and created some turnovers which lead to a couple of easy baskets to tie it up at the half, " said Pointer coach Mitch Wainwright.
The second half saw a battle between Pointers Clara Chambers (14 points) and Jessica Schultz (11 points) and Riverdale's Meister (15 points) and McKenzie Couey (10 points).
The Pointers won the second half battle 42-31.
"I am not sure we slowed them down in the second half giving up almost the same number of points (31) as in the first half, but we took better care of the ball and got shots for ourselves," Wainwright pionted out.
He mentioned that Schultz blocked several shots and also scored 11 of her 20 points in the second half, many of them in transition against Riverdale's pressure.
"Clara Chambers accounted for several assists to Jessica in that stretch," he said.
Wainwright concluded saying, "I was very happy with several of the girls that came off the bench due to our foul trouble. Myah Aschliman, McKenzie Schmitz and McKenna Reichling all played a big role in our success last night."
Chambers and Schultz both finished the night with 20 points to lead the Pointer offense. Syd Staver aded 12.
Riverdale was paced by Meister's 27 points with Couley hitting 16.
Between them they had nine of Riverdale's 11 threes.
