Hannah Whitish sets another mark
He said how great it was that Hannah Whitish broke the school's all-time scoring record late in the game.
"Rachel Slaney (who graduated last year) had a record that probably would have stood for quite some time at other schools. Unfortunately she had a younger teammate, Hannah Whitish, coming along," he said.
Whitish hit a driving lay-in for her ninth point of the game. She finished with 12, breaking Slaney's mark of 1664 - now having 1667.
Until late in the second half she only had two points, but a couple of steals by her teammates and points in transition got her going.
The 11-point win didn't come easy. The Eagles held what was a pretty convincing lead at halftime at 31-18, but led only 43-40 before an 8-0 run closed out the game.
And besides Slaney and Hannah Whitish, Pickart also talked about Mia Whitish, who scored 8 of her 16 points late in the game when she beat the Loyal match-up zone and got free for layups.
And Pickarts talked about Loyal 6'2" junior Karsyn Rueth, who scored 15 points, sitting part of the second half in foul trouble.
"She's very versatile. She'll go outside and hurt you when you take away the inside. She loves to dribble penetrate and that's what we tried to take away from her," the coach said.
"Loyal is a tremendous team," he added. "Their guards are quick and they rebound well offensively. They have a tough match-up zone, but #3 (Devyn Schoonover) stayed on Hannah the entire game. They will give Assumption a run in tournaments."
