Pointers get rare sweep of Cubans in regular season

When the state of Wisconsin's newest 400 game winner said "It was a good game" it may have been an understatement.
It was a great game.
And for the first time in recent history, Mineral Point's girls basketball team swept Cuba City in the regular season and won the league title with an unblemished 14-0 record.
"I am really proud of the girls,"said Pointer coach Mitch Wainwright. "Winning the SWAL was one of their goals."
It was a real squeaker--57-53--with the lead changing hands several times throughout the game and 11 times being tied. It wasn't until Cassie Bossert drilled a basket late in the game that gave the Pointers the lead for good.
A three point play by Ally Averkamp got the Cubans close at the end but a Clara Chambers basket sewed it up for the Pointers.
The Pointers had earned at least a share of the SWAL crown coming in and knew the worst that could happen was a co-championship.
But the sweep made things even better.
It wasn't easy as Wainwright pointed out.
"We had to work through some foul trouble and had to call on some girls to step up. They did what we needed and turned in several big plays."
For the Cubans it was a valiant effort especially after losing leading scorer Jessi Marti to a head injury early and Kaitlyn Kaiser to fouls late. Kaiser led the Cubans with 15 points before exiting.
The Pointers got 24 points from Chambers and 13 more from 6-3 center Jessica Schultz. They had eight girls score.
"I am very proud of how our girls handled the adversity tonight," Cuba City coach Jeff Pustina said.  "We had to ask some girls to play positions and roles they hadn't played before."
The Pointers finished the SWAL 14-0 and the regular season 20-2. The Cubans have two losses for the regular season, both to the Pointers. They finished 12-2 in the SWAL and are 20-2 overall.
The Pointers drew the number one seed in the Division 4 Regionals and had a first round bye. They host #8 seed Waterloo Friday.
If the Cubans and Pointers neet again it would be in the Sectional Semi-finals at Monroe March 3.
