Dodge-Point does it for Tori, RV fourth

Dodge-Point was third and River Valley fourth at the SWC conference meet as both teams had issues with injuries.
For the Blackhawks the injuries are the continuing kind. For the Dodge-Pointers a fresh one cost them a higher finish and eliminated one of their top gymnasts from further competition this year.
"It was a bitter sweet meet for us," Dodge-Point coach Julia Oellerich said. "We tied for second in the conference with Platteville/Belmont/Lancaster, but lost an outstanding gymnast in the process. Tori Palzkill went down with a season ending elbow injury in the second round."
"My heart just broke for her. After her back injury last season, she was told she would never do gymnastics again. But of course that didn't stop Tori. She not only came back from that injury, but she worked her tail off and continued to improve her skills and scores. To get this close at a chance to compete in the State tournament, which has been her goal since her freshman year, and to have her career end like this, so abruptly, was devastating," Oellerich said.
"As you can imagine, we were all shaken after Tori's injury. But we huddled together and decided that we weren't competing for just ourselves or the team anymore; we were doing it for Tori. And we did! We had several personal bests and one of the best nights on beam that we have all year."
"Lauren May took first at the conference meet on bars, for the second year running, along with second on beam, third on floor, and second in the all-around competition. Alyssa Belling also had a great meet, tying for fourth on vault, and taking fifth in the all-around competition."
"I couldn't be more proud of the girls. Although we fell shy of the Conference Champ title, we pulled ourselves up by our boot straps and tied for second in the conference. It was still a huge accomplishment, especially after losing such an essential member of our team. So, Tori, this one's for you. Keep your chin up kid. You're going to do great things."
River Valley coach Julie Kuhse figured the Blackhawks would have problems scoring high as a team at the meet.
"Without Caroline Iausly at full strength, we knew we weren't going to move up the ranks in team standings, but we have strong individuals who could medal," Kuhse said. "It was out second highest team score of the season. We had our season high on bars, with Caroline and Claire Eno both medaling."
Also for the Hawks, Eno finished in sixth on vault just out of medal range, but scored a personal best. Andrea Tennis also had a personal best on vault.
"We changed Kara Hutter's beam routine a bit," Kuhse said. "She only had one fall and scored a personal best."
"It was great to have Caroline back in competition. She was cautious but solid. We look forward to what all the girls will accomplish at sectionals," added Kuhse.
Sectionals are at Baraboo High School Friday, February 26 starting at 5pm.
