Panthers nip Eagles for SWAL title tie

The first half Tuesday the Iowa-Grant boys basketball team was watching a hot shooting Fennimore team drill basket after basket, leading them to wonder what they would have to do to get that to stop.
Brett Needham had 12 points and Liam Kinney 10 for the Golden Eagles to keep them within five at halftime, 30-25, in a game the Panthers needed to tie for the SWAL title.
"Fennimore shot the lights out the first half," said Panther coach Toby Tripalin.
They didn't cool off much early in the second half either as they led by eight with 12 minutes left.
But then the Panthers went into takeover mode, got some big plays from Isaac Anderson, Brayden Johnson and Collin Price and went on to earn a share of the league title with a 61-53 win.
"Isaac and Brayden took over and we were not going to be denied," Tripalin said. Anderson totaled 15 of his game high 25 points the second half and Johnson had nine of his 17 including a big three point shot late in the second frame to put the Panthers up by five.
Add in a couple penetration baskets by Price and a tough it out defensive effort from Eric Raimer and the Panthers set up a showdown in their final two games with Darlington and Mineral Point.
The Panthers travel to Darlington Friday to face the Redbirds, the only team that can tie them for the title as they trail Iowa-Grant by two games. They host Mineral Point the following Thursday.
Tripalin had extra praise for Raimer for his play off the bench.
"He plays so hard," Tripalin said. "He played some suffocating defense and made two free throws that got us within two late in the game."
Then Anderson and Johnson shot the Panthers the rest of the way.
"It won't be easy our last two games," said Tripalin. "Both Darlington and Mineral Point are tough teams."
Needham led Fennimore with 16 points while Kinney finished with 13.
