Dodger girls handle River Valley

Dodgeville's girls basketball won their first game of the season Friday night in a SWC doubleheader that finds the girls and boys teams playing on the same night. They toppled host River Valley 58-46 and are now 1-0 in the league.
Junior Hannah Jones rolled in 36 points to lead both teams in scoring on the night.
She hit 17 in the first half to help her team to a 24-22 edge at the intermission. Then her 19, that included seven free throws coming mainly down the stretch. bolstered them to a 32-24 advantage.
Dodger junior Ellie Argall added 10 points to the mix.
"We played a pretty solid team game," said Dodger coach josh Busch. "The kids looked to shoot more and played aggressively. We didn't have the number of turnovers we've been having."
The Dodgers used a full court press that played havoc with thee River Valley guards and them setting up their offense.
"Our pressure isn't going to give up something right away, but it will force the other team to make some bad passes and make mistakes - and that's what happened tonight," he added. "We rotated better and played better on the back end. Tonight we played like a team."
Jones sat out a couple of times in some foul trouble in the second half, but the Dodgers didn't flinch without their main ball handler.
Bush said, "When Hannah was in foul trouble and on the bench, nobody panicked and they did what they needed to do."
River Valley senior Taylor Briehl led her team's offense with 17 points and was also one of their main ball handlers.
Senior Alyssa Esser added 14 points.
"We definitely have played better," said River Valley coach Brent johnson. "i thought we played well against both Mineral Point and Reedsburg, but tonight was different. We struggled putting the ball in the hole and their pressure forced us into some bad mistakes."
"They had a couple of girls knock down some shots when Jones was out. We just didn't commit to help defense," he added. "Dodgeville won the turnover battle."
He also said he felt that Riley Feiner played well (10 points) and got a lot of rebounds.
"I really didn't like the way we came out at the start," the coach pointed out. "We didn't have any intensity."
