A reminder to be kind

By Brooke Bechen-bbechen@thedodgevillechronicle.com

It is December and many of us are wrapping up our Christmas shopping (or just starting). We're preparing our menu for the big holiday event with friends and family and cleaning like crazy to make sure our homes are spotless for when the relatives come. We have our Christmas trees up (or are thinking about putting them up) and many of us took advantage of milder weather a few weeks ago and hung our Christmas lights and decorations outside with care.
In the midst of all the holiday preparation, these past few weeks have also brought some alarming news on this reporter's front. First, my father was hospitalized with a health issue for several days - startling our family and revitalizing the importance of making healthier choices.
I found myself saying "we're not old enough" when I learned one of my high school classmates' cancer has returned. And I was shocked to hear of the passing of a similarly-aged acquaintance, by his own hand.
Battles know no boundaries, no limits; battles do not discriminate by age or gender. We certainly should know that everyone we interact with, either in person or online, may be fighting a battle that is unseen.
But sometimes, I think we need a reminder.
Be kind to those you run into at the grocery store or pass by on the street, your neighbors, your friends, your family, your co-workers. Think before you hit send or say something nasty to someone.
Taking a quote from the Dalai Lama: "Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible."
I challenge each and every reader to do at least one kind act before the end of the year. It doesn't have to be a huge act - just be kind to someone. Being kind does not cost anything, and in fact, it is priceless.
