Balance keys Iowa-Grant's win over Hornets

Three players scored two touchdowns each and one other scored one as Iowa-Grant ran past Richland Center 46-26 in a non-conference opener for both teams.
Travis Arndt, Brady Peat and Clayton Kite all scored twice while Charles Christianson got into the end zone once to pace the Panthers. Peat also kicked four conversions.
Arndt started it with a 27 yard scamper and Peat's kick made it 7-0.
Next came Kite who took a seven yard pass from quarterback Caleb Hill.
Christianson and Hill hooked up on a 46 yard pass play for a score and with Peat's kick the score was 20-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Richland Center scored first in the second frame on a two yard run by Caleb Coleman but that was only a temporary glitch. Peat and Arndt took over for the Panthers on runs of 45 by Peat and three by Arndt.
After halftime Peat ran for a 14 yard score and Kite stepped in from the nine. Sandwiched between the two scores was a touchdown run by Richland Center's Keon Miller that spanned 51 yards.
The Hornets added a pair of scores in the fourth.
In their first game without Brayden Johnson, who was the leading runner last year before graduating, the question was who would assume that role. It was answered by Peat and Arndt who ran for 165 and 115 on 16 and 15 carries.
"Our offensive success will rely on a balanced attack," coach Gary Allen said.
Much of the success of the run game depends on the play of the offensive line and Friday that group rose to the test.
"We were able to control the line of scrimmage and our backs and receivers took advantage," Allen said.
With Caleb Hill calling the signals for the second year the Panthers ran smoothly. Hill was eight for 11 for 151 yards and the touchdown pass to Christianson.
"He made several good decisions and executed the offense well," Allen said.
Defensively the Panthers gave a solid performance.
Clint Havlik forced two fumbles and recovered a fumble.
"With the exception of a few missed tackles our defense played all right," Allen said. "The tackling was pretty even."
Allen came away from the first action of the year with a need for the backups to step up their game as the season progresses.
That should happen, according to Allen.
"It is early but our kids have shown a willingness to work hard and play together," Allen said.
It is Iowa-Grant's turn to host one of the area's top teams Friday when the Pecatonica-Argyle Vikings visit Garry Crull Field.
