Pointers overcome Panther big lead


Mineral Point's softball team scored 11 runs in the last three innings Thursday for a key 11-6 SWAL win over host Iowa-Grant.
The Panthers and Maranda McCarthy were cruising along with a 6-0 lead after four frames.
Shortstop Hannah Stevens was supplying the power.
They struck for two in the first as, with two outs, Emma Liddicoat rapped a grounder to left and Stevens followed with a shot over the left centerfield fence for a 2-0 lead.
McCarthy started the two run third with a one out double. Stevens followed wih her second round tripper.
Their final two came in the fourth as Lexi Busse doubled and Morgan Eisele singled her home. She went to third on an Elana Winders ground out and scored on Olson's single to right.
The Pointer bats finally came laive as Clara Chambers singled, but was caught trying to steal second. Megan Blume walked and Carlie Quallety was safe on a fielders choice. With two out, Destinee Kruser singled, McKenzie Schmitz reached on an error. Elise Ames singled plating both Qualley and Kruser. Rebakah Ottoway doubled driving in Schmitz. Then Savannah Lawinger reached on an error and Ames and Ottoway both scored.
With the Pointers trailing 6-5 in the sixth, Qualley and Kruser both singled. Schmitz was hit by a pitch and Ames reached on an error scoring two runs. Ottoway singled with Schmitz scoring for an 8-6 Pointer lead.
They finished their scoring in the seventh with Chambers walking and scoring on a Qualley single. She scored after Kruser singled, Schmitz singled and Ottoway's single drove in both Qualley and Kruser.
Kruser was 3x4, Ottoway 3x5 and Qualley 2x5 to lead the Pointer bats. Lawinger, Ames, Schmitz and Chambers each had solo safeties.
Lawinger struck out four without a walk and gave up six earned runs on 11 hits.
For I-G, Olson, Lauren Winkler, Stevens, and Liddicoat each had two hits. McCarthy, Busse and Eisele each had one hit.
McCarthy walked didn't strike out anyone, waked four and gave up only five earned runs of the 11 and 12 hits.
