Pointers come up short after late rally


Mineral Point's baseball team challenged Platteville from the SWC before losing to the Hillmen 7-5 in a non-conference game Monday.
The Pointers were trailing 7-2 before they erupted for three runs in the seventh to make it close.
Their big frame was ignited by a single by Curtis Cox who then scored on a double by Taylor Robinson. An error scored Robinson and put Jake Gorgen on base. Cole Howard walked and a walk to Joey Dolphin loaded the bases. Zach Cummins then singled to complete the scoring.
The Pointers scored solo runs in the fifth and sixth. Robinson doubled in the fifth and scored on a fielders choice by Gorgen. The run in the sixth came on a long home run by Joey Dolphin.
"We hit the ball hard all game but could not find the gaps," said coach Jordan Tibbits.
Robinson was 2x3 with two doubles for the Pointers. Cummins was 3x4 while Cole Howard and Cox had singles.
Matt Lambert had two rbis and scored three runs for the Hillmen.  He homered in the fourth. Mitch Knokel doubled in a run in the same frame and Jason Withrow scored what proved to be the winning run on a fielders choice.
Knokel was 3x4 for the Hillmen and knocked in three runs.
Dylan McGilvra went the first three innings for the Pointers, walking three, giving up three hits and three runs, all earned. He also hit two batters.
Sawyer Wallace went the last four, striking out two, walking three and spacing five hits. He gave up four runs, three earned.
Blake Noel got into the seventh for the Hillmen. He left with one out after fanning seven, walking one and giving up seven his, five runs of which four were earned.
Lambert got the last two outs. He fanned one, walked one and gave up one hit.
The Pointers travel to Belleville for a non-conference game Thursday then travel to Iowa-Grant for a SWAL contest Friday,
