Pointer softball runners-up at tourney


Mineral Point finished second at their own softball tournament on Saturday.
They topped Belleville 3-0 in a game that lasted just over an hour and then dropped a tough 5-4 decision to Platteville in in eight innings in the title game.
Savannah Lawinger limited the Lady Wildcats to just three singles and one walk in the opener.
Their pitcher, Lacy Heller, reached second base twice, but was stranded there both times.
Lawinger fanned five with only that one free pass.
Destinee Kruser was 2x3 to lead the hitters and she scored twice. She led off the fourth with a single, stole second and scored on a McKenzie Schmitz single for the only run her team would need.
Kruser also doubled in the sixth, stole third and trotted home on a wild pitch.
Rebekah Ottoway reached on an error to lead off the seventh, stole second, went to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch.
Besides the two hits by Kruser and one by McKenzie Schmiz, Morgan James was 2x3 and Clara Chambers had a safety.
Heller fanned six and walked one in taking the tough loss for Belleville.
Plattevile scored twice in the to of the first with an error being the key play.
The Pointers buonced back to take a 4-2 lead in their half of the inning as Chambers led off with a double and Megan Blume followed with a triple. Kruser singled her home and stole second. She came in on Schmitz's two bagger. Schmitz scored after two sacrifice bunts, one by Elise Ames and the other by Ottoway. The score stood that way until the seventh when the Lady Hillmen plated two runs on a single by Brecke.
They scored their gamewinner in the top of the eighth and then held the Pointers even tough they loaded the bases, had the tying run thrown out at the plate with the game ending on a fly to the shortstop.
The Pointers had 10 hits with Blume, Ames and Schmitz each getting two and solo safeties coming from Chamber, Carlie Qualley, Kruser and James.
