Chambers homers to pace Pointers


Pointer senior shortstop Clara Chambers rapped a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to carry her Mineral Point softball team to a 3-1 win over Cuba City Thursday.
The Cubans had scored first in the top of the first when Jessi Marti singled and stole second and third. She trotted home on a ground out by pitcher Emily Wiederholt.
From there on out Pointer hurler Savannah Lawinger allowed a runner to reach second in the sixth - when she forced pop outs to her and the catcher and a grounder to second - and one to reach third in the seventh. She was stranded after doubling y a grounder to second and a strikeout.
Lawinger struck out four, walked nobody and gave up just that one run on five hits.
Wiederholt allowed the three tallies on eight hits while fanning four and walking one.
Pointer Destinee Kruser was 2x3 and scored her team's first run in the second after doubling and a single by Elise Ames.
Lawinger also had two safeties with Chambers, McKenzie Schmitz, Rebekah Ottoway and Morgan James each getting one.
Marti was 2x3 for the Cubans.
