Pointers overpower Birds


The margin of victory came in the first inning with four runs as Mineral Point outlasted Darlington 7-3 in a SWAL conference softball win Thursday.
Destinee Kruser. McKenzie Schmitz, Elise Ames and Rebekah Ottoway each drove in one in that frame.
The Redbirds had taken a 1-0 lead in their half of that inning as Ava Volkening singled to drive in Callie Norton who had reached on an error.
Pointer Clara Chambers was hit by a pitch to start their half of the first. With two outs, Kruser doubled in Chambers. Schmitz, Ames and Ottoway followed with rbi singles.
Megan Blume tripled and scored on Carlie Qualley's single in the second for a 5-1 lead.
Morgan James singled and Chambers doubled with James scoring on a Blume ground out in the fourth.
Chambers scored their final run in the sixth. After tripling, she stole home.
Three walks and a single produced a run for Darlington in the sixth and another rbi single by Volkening gave them their final tally in the seventh.
Chambers and James were 2x3 on the day with Blume, Qualley, Kruser, Schmitz, Ames and Ottoway all getting one hit.
Savannah Lawinger worked five innings striking out six without a walk. She gave up one unearned run on three hits in earning the victory.
Ames finished fanning three, walking five and allowing two runs and two hits.
Redbird Kelly Reichling surrendered seven earned runs on 10 hits while striking out two without issuing a free pass.
