Pointer baseball wins first game


It took a few tries, but the Mineral Point baseball team finally did it coming up with its first win of the season Tuesday with a come from behind 10-7 victory over Southwestern.
The Wildcats took a quick 2-0 lead in the first frame and were up 3-0 in the fourth.
The Pointers went ahead with a four spot in their half of the fourth, but Southwestern came back with four in their half of the fifth for a 7-4 lead.
That's when the Pointer bats came alive.
Cole Howard drove in two runs with a double and Brant James traded places with him for an 8-7 Pointer lead.
Joey Dolphin singled and Zach Cummins coaxed a walk to load the bases. Curtis Cox drove in the final two tallies with a single.
James, Dolphin and Cox all were 2x4 for the Pointers.
James worked the first six frames on the mound. He struck out three, walked three and gave up seven runs (3 earned) on nine hits.
Dolphin finished giving up one hit while fanning two.
The Ponters committed seven errors behind their throwers.
Kurt Tranel went 5 2/3 frames for Southwestern. He struck out two, walked two and gave up five runs on six hits.
Gerrit Jochum went 1/3 allowing two runs on four hits with two walks.
Kurt Tranel was 2x4 with three rbi while Kyle Tranel was 2x4 and Cameron Lisk 2x5 to pace the Wildcat hitters.
"It was nice to get that first win," said Pointer coach Jordan Tibbits.
The Pointers travel to Riverdale Thursday.
