Pecatonica shuts down Pointers

Four Pecatonica pitchers stymied Mineral Point's hitters to just two hits and a 9-1 win Tuesday in the season opener for both baseball teams.
AJā€ˆHendrickson worked the first two frames. He didn't allow a run or hit while striking out five, walking two and hitting a batter.
Riley Gould went the next two fanning nobody, walking one and allowing the Pointer tally and one hit.
Jarrett Carlson went the next frame without allowing a run or hit while striking out one.
Chandler went the final frame fanning a pair without a walk, run or hit.
The Vikings scored all the runs they needed in the first frame with passed balls and errors contributing to the cause.
Pecatonica scored once in both the second and fourth and added two in each the fifth and sixth.
Viking Brooks Chandler was 3x5 and scored twice while Jake Dearth was 2x4. Colton Schraepfer polled a double.
"We were missing three starters," said Viking coach Jim Strommen. "The younger guys who filled in did a good job. They stepped right in and everybody contributed in some way. Every role on our team is important. And all the pitchers threw mostly strikes."
He mentioned they turned a big double play to get them out of a jam in the fourth.
"They had a single, a stolen base and an error then a double play left nobody on base. We then had a walk and our second baseman made a nice running catch to end the inning."
The Pointer hits came from Dylan MacGilvra and Zach Cummins. MacGilvra singled and then stole a base before scoring on Cummins' safety.
Brandt James started on the mound. He fanned four, walked six while allowing seven runs on seven hits. The Pointers had five errors behind him.
Sawyer Wallace finished up striking out one, walking one and allowing two runs on one hit with one error behind him.
"We are young," said Pointer first year coach Jordan Tibbits. "I felt Brandt pithed okay. We just didn't make the plays (6 errors)."
The Pointers host Platteville Friday.
Pecatonica travels to New Glarus Thursday.
