Along the Ad Routes

By Mike Reilly-mreilly@thedodgevillechronicle.com

We received a note from a "longtime" subscriber - Emaline Brun - the other
day. She wrote: "I enjoy the Chronicle and thank you for sending it. I turned
100 years on September 5th so most of my friends are gone, but I still enjoy
reading it."

I sure hope that if I live to be 100 that I can still write letters and spell
everything correctly! Actually, I don't spell everything correctly now!

I attended the 1st Annual Suicide Prevention Walk Saturday night at Harris
Park. This is something new and wasn't as well attended as the people putting
it on had hoped, but it was informative and there were some pretty nice displays
and events going on. One event was the "Mrs. Doubtfire Challenge"
that was done in honor of actor Robin Williams, who had died from suicide.
People smashed pies in their faces and then challenged someone else to do
the same. Then they sent lanterns off into the air as a closing ceremony. That
was something watching them disappear in a distance into the night sky!
There was a woman from a state agency there who will come to discuss suicide
with any group.

Barneveld always has one of the best Fair Day (Homecoming) parades in
the area. Each lower grade school class dresses with the theme of the parade
and does a little skit for the crowd. That took place Saturday also. They display
a lot of crafts inside the school for people to view. They are judged and
awarded ribbons too.

A few of us - Chamber of Commerce members - put up cornstalks in the
downtown area Saturday afternoon. I didn't have to lift hardly any because
two "older" fellas and two "younger" fellas did the heavy work. I didn't really
have allergies haunting me before, but after being around all that corn I
really suffered that night!

Check out the above photo of (l-r) Dale Richardson, Gary Bay and Bob
Kratochwill doing the heavy work while Terry Carroll was driving the truck
along the corn rows and I was relegated to taking photos! Chamber director
Lynn Price couldn't be there, so I was appointed to taking the photos!

October is Fire Prevention Month. The Mineral Point Fire Department is
holding an open house at their station on Sunday, October 4th. It might be
worth checking out to see all the new equipment they now use in fire fighting!
It has changed a lot since I was a member in Dodgeville during the 70s
and 80s!

The Dodgeville Taco Bell is going up pretty fast. I haven't gotten an opening
date on it yet, but should pretty soon. There are a lot of people waiting
for it to open, but I still wish there was a Kentucky Fried Chicken along with
it!
