Wildcats score first, Panthers score more

After letting Southwestern quarterback Jacob Banfield get loose for a 21 yard scoring run with 7:30 gone in the first quarter the Iowa-Grant football said that was enough.
After Brayden Johnson scored on a three yard plunge on the way to a three touchdown night the Panthers not only set things even they also put 30 unanswered points on the board for a 30-6 win over the Wildcats.
The game finished early because of lightning, leaving seven unplayed minutes on the clock.
The win kept the Panthers undefeated on the season and sets up a big game with Mineral Point this week.
Johnson's score at 3:57 tied the game and he wasn't done yet. The Panther senior added a 22 yard run and a four yard run with a touchdown in both the second and third quarters. Caleb Hill passed two point conversions to Acea Upmann and Isaac Anderson for a 22-6 lead.
Johnson carried all but 10 times and got all the yards except 18 as the Panthers ran 52 times for 208 yards. Johnson had 190 on 42 attempts.
"Brayden just keeps improving game by game," coach Gary Allen said. "He runs hard and takes care of the ball. Also the offensive line, ends, and fullbacks blocked well most of the night."
A Hill to Anderson 14 yard pass with 1:27 left in the third and a conversion run by Travis Arndt created the 30-6 finale.
Hill passed nine times, completing four, for 39 yards as the Panthers played most of the game on the ground.
"All of our drives were the result of drives based on the run game," said Allen. "With the rain it was hard to throw the ball much."
After the warning shot fired by the Wildcats the Panthers shut them down with their defense.
"Our kids just tightened up their jobs," said Allen. "We played very good team defense after that first drive."
The Panthers were also helped with a pair of fumble recoveries.
"The weather conditions made it hard to take good care of the ball," Allen said. "We took advantage when we got our opportunities."
It was another key win on the road to the SWAL title and a play-off berth.
"Our objective is to improve each game and we believe we did that this week," Allen said. "Any conference win is a good win and it gets us closer to our goals."

"I really liked the way we focused as a team in the second quarter and second half," Allen said. " Our blocking and tackling seemed to get better as the game went on."
The Panthers host Mineral Point Friday.
"They are a very good team with size, speed, and a very good quarterback," Allen said. "We will need to play well."
