Along the Ad Routes

By Mike Reilly-mreilly@thedodgevillechronicle.com

I was crossing the main street of Dodgeville the other day and was walking
with another fellow. Someone called out to me that I didn't have an orange
flag in my hand. They said I looked pretty good in orange! Oh, and it wasn't
a woman, so I just shrugged off the "looking pretty good" part!

I missed a chance to go to Bob's BBQ Saturday with nephew Darren, wife
Michele and their two boys. Darren hadn't been there before, so it was his
choice place to go. The report by the two youngsters was that they really
liked the ribs (that were actually their dad's). I missed out because they were
there at around 5:00 p.m. and I was taking photos at the Iowa County Fair
Junior Livestock Auction. I made it back by 6:30, but just missed them. I did
get to talk with them all at the Chronicle office - their next stop!

There's a lot of activity going on in Dodgeville again. There are plans in
the process to complete work at the former Dodgeville Truck Stop. Jeff Jewell
has started a business called JJ's BBQ where he has a wagon that he can
travel around to events and spots to set up. There is work being done at the
former Lands' End outlet location downtown for Bob Allbright (Edward
Jones) to move into. It looks as if we are going to keep our downtown video
store (Box Office Video). Morton Buildings has broken ground and begun
building a new plant south of town just off the four lane. The Taco Bell building
is moving right along out near County Kitchen. Still the downtown needs
retail businesses!

I spent several days at the Iowa County Fair. The last time I probably spent
several days there was back in the 1960s when I was still showing purebred
Hampshire hogs. I was at the hog show on Friday this year. Boy the animals
sure don't much resemble the ones I remember showing - most of the "oldsters"
will tell you the same thing! The swine barn was added onto this year
and Friday it was named the "Gard Swine Pavilion" in honor of Glenn Gard
(Cobb), who has been involved in hogs for quite a few years. I talked with
him a little about when we raised hogs years back. He said he remembered
his dad buying a boar from us. Hey, maybe we were instrumental in getting
them started out on the right foot!!!

While at the fair I always run into people I maybe only see once a year
(fair time) and get a chance to catch up with them. I do have to thank the
Tibbits family from Mineral Point for sharing their front row seats with me
at the auction so I didn't have to move very far to get photos!!

Check out the long line at a tropical ice stop with the midway in the background.
The "cold" drinks were very popular each day with temperatures
around 90!

The UW Badgers football team got off to a pretty shaky start Saturday night
taking on a power in Alabama. It was quite a test for a young Badgers team
and really they held up fairly well. Losing one of their top defensive players
in Michael Caputo was a pretty big blow - hopefully they can recover quickly,

Don't forget the annual DASFI golf outing and scholarship fundraiser is
Sunday, September 20 at Dodge Point Golf Course. We are still in need of a
few teams, so if you're hankering to play some golf, win some prizes, have
a lot of fun and have a lot to eat and drink - join us out there and if you need
to sign up, let me know!
