Panthers, Johnson respond to early deficit

When Boscobel senior fullback Casey Swenson found the end zone from seven yards out for the first score of the game, Iowa-Grant's football team new it had some work to do.
So, about seven minutes after Swenson's score the Panthers answered then went on to cruise to a 54-12 win in the SWAL test.
The Panthers scored at the 8:50 mark of the second quarter on a halfback option when Brayden Johnson flipped a pass to Brent Coppernoll that tied the game.
"Brayden got the pass off and Brent make a good catch," said Panther coach Gary Allen.
At 6:28 Johnson completed a Panther drive, plunging into the end zone from a yard out. The Panthers added two points on a Caleb Hill to Johnson pass play.
With 4:43 left in the second frame Swenson struck again, completing a drive with a one yard dive. That made the score 14-12 and was the last time the Bulldogs would find the end zone the rest of the night.
Space started to form between the point spread when senior Acea Upmann fielded the kick off and returned it 71 yards to swell the score to 20-12. Johnson's seven yard scamper with 1:59 left in the half and a conversion kick by Upmann gave the Panthers a 27-12 lead at the half.
"Acea is an all-around good player," Allen said. "He always plays hard and is a good leader. His kick return gave the team a huge lift."
The second half was all Panthers. Johnson took over to score twice in the third quarter and the Panthers added two points on a Hill to Upmann pass while getting one point on Upmann's kick.
The senior back added to his five touchdown game with 11:50 left on a 15 yard scamper.
"Brayden has consistently run the ball very hard," said Allen. "He seems to improve a little each game."
Junior Trae Kuenster completed the scoring for the Panthers when he plunged in from the two with 49 seconds left in the game.
The Panthers also kicked in the defense after the second Bulldogs score.
"After the first quarter the kids settled into their assignments and played well as a team," Allen said. "They seemed to get more aggressive as the game went along."
The Panthers ran for 339 yards on 56 carries. Johnson lugged the football 33 times and picked up 221 yards. Zach Campbell also pounded the turf for 68 more on 12 carries.
"Zach runs the ball hard when he is given the chance," Allen said. "He is getting better each week."
Hill threw a dozen times, completed five for 52 yards. Isaac Anderson grabbed three for 40 yards.
Swenson led Boscobel with 107 yards on 14 tries. Brian Waterman was three for five for 61 yards passing for the Bulldogs while Dallas Marks hauled in two for 42 yards.
The Panthers host Riverdale Friday for homecoming in a SWAL game.
"Riverdale has some good players and always plays hard," Allen said. "We need to play well."
During ceremonies that night, the football field will be named in honor of former coach Garry Crull.
