Cardinals play hard in loss to Potosi

Highland's football team played Potosi even for the first quarter before a second quarter spurt by the Chieftains paved the way for a 34-21 win in a Six Rivers game Friday.
Nathan Friederick scored the first touchdown and gave the Chieftains a 7-0 lead. The Cardinals answered when Adam Wolfe plunged in from the one and Drew Hennessey kicked the conversion.
"We played well in the first quarter," said coach Mike Aide. "In the second quarter we had some mental breakdowns and Potosi made some really great plays on offense and defense."
The second quarter saw the Chieftains score twice on short runs by quarterback Tyler Udelhofen and Nathan Friederick. Udelhofen got in from the one and Friederick scored from the four.
Teagan Friederick scored on a two yard run in the third quarter to boost the Potosi lead to 28-7.
The Cardinals put up a couple scores in the final quarter. Quarterback JR Linscheid capped a drive with a three yard plunge and also threw a 10 yard scoring strike to Evan Rusch.
Potosi got another score from Nathan Friederick to complete a three touchdown night.
Linscheid accounted for 159 yards for the Cardinals. He ran 18 times for 88 yards and scored a touchdown. He also completed six of 12 passes for 77 yards and a touchdown.
Wolfe was the leading ground gainer for the Cardinals with 91 yards and a score.
"John Linscheid and Adam Wolfe had tough sledding on the running game but the offensive line gave John time to pass and pick up some crucial first downs," Aide said. "When Adam and the offensive line start rolling the rest of the offense flows smoothly. Unfortunately we were inconsistent at times and caused us trouble during the game."
Aide was pleased with some of the defensive performances
We got some strong play from our defensive ends," Aide said. "Drew Hennessey and Drew Drury both played a great game. They both had their hands full but were solid.".
"As a whole our defense played hard made some great plays but they also made some mistakes," Aide said. "We will break down film and address the concerns in practice to get ready for Bangor.
"I said at the beginning of the week that we had to play four great quarters of football to compete with Potosi," Aide said. "Our team played their tails off but came up short on some plays and had 21-7 deficit to overcome at halftime. They never gave up and showed me that whoever they play is going to get four quarters of hard nose football."
Bangor, Highland's non-conference opponent this week is one of the top teams in the division.
"We play Bangor on Saturday who is currently 3-0 and is ranked third in Division 7. Jordan Laufenberg (former Highland alum) is an assistant coach there and has done a tremendous job with their team. We are looking forward to be playing against them and representing the Six Rivers Conference on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.," Aide said. "I'm looking forward to a great game on Saturday."
