Vikings turn back Panthers in ground battle

In a non-conference game played in a steady downpour and one that featured three fumbles in 90 seconds Pecatonica/Argyle outlasted Iowa-Grant 34-12 Friday.
Brayden Johnson accounted for the two Panther scores, one on a 10 yard jaunt in the first quarter for the first score of the game and the other on a three yard run in the final frame.
The Panthers rolled up 240 yards on the ground and passed for 114 more but could not get into the end zone. But it wasn't for lack of trying.
Johnson rolled up 150 yards on 36 carries and Zachary Campbell added 89 on 15 tries.
Caleb Hill completed nine of 16 passed for 114 yards, two to Isaac Anderson for 55 yards and four to Campbell for 28.
A 25 yard pass to Anderson set up the first Panther score.
"We had one drive stopped at the goal line and a couple others stopped in their territory," Panther coach Gary Allen said. "Their defense got tougher the closer we got and we were not able to punch it in,"
As for the match-up Allen said P/A is a big, quick physical team.
"They are very well coached," he added. "Our biggest problem was their ability to make the play when it counted most. Hopefully we will learn from this game."
Allen thought the turning point came in the second quarter when the Vikings halted a fourth and goal play at the two yard line.
"We didn't respond well and it seemed to give them a boost," Allen said.
Riley Ostby scored three times for the Vikings on runs of 24, 75 and nine. He picked up 188 yards on 17 carries for the night.
The Vikings only tried one pass, a 13 yard strike to Brooks Chandler, for a perfect one for one.
Chandler also scored on a 50 yard run and Anthony Hendrickson got in on an eight yard carry for the first Viking score of the game.
Ostby and Cam Truethardt both scored on two point conversion runs.
Treuthardt led the Vikings with 18 tackles and Ostby added 15.
"There is a lot to be learned from this game," Allen said."They were able to make the big plays and we weren't. We can make the big plays too if we do our jobs consistently."
The Panthers are at Boscobel Friday.
"They are an improving program and are 2-0 right now," Allen said. "We will need to play very well."
"We blocked well - ran the ball well - overcoming the wet weather and a number of fumbles," said Viking coach Larry Green. "I was pleased with our defense and the work they did in defending the Iowa-Grant running backs. Our kids - for the most part, following their assignments, gang tackled and we were successful in defending."
"Looking ahead to Black Hawk - they're a very quick and scrappy team. They really flow well to the ball on defense and are successful in that veer offense they run. Again it's going to be a key for our kids to follow their assignments in defending Friday."
The Warriors come into Friday's match-up undefeated at 2-0 and after toppling Shullsburg 24-0 last weekend.
