Reedsburg's option too much for Vikings

After a scoreless first quarter both Reedsburg and Mount Horeb/Barneveld got going.
The problem is Reedsburg kept going while the Vikings struggled to keep up. The Beavers continued for a 30-16 win.
Cal Mazur scored a touchdown and fired a halfback pass to Zeff Smith in the second quarter and two kicks by Mason McMillen gave Reedsburg a 14-10 lead at the half.
The Vikings scored first on a Max Meylor to Trey Recknor 9 yard pass and got an extra point along with a 32 yard field goal from kicker Josh Beier for their first half output.
The Beavers took control of the third quarter with a 13-6 scoring difference. Mazur caught a 33 yard pass from Jack Yager then Yager kicked out a 45 yard run as the Beavers outscored the Vikings and took a 27-16 lead after three.
MHB scored on a 33 yard strike from Meylor to Trey Laube.
The Beavers got the final score on a 31 yard McMillen field goal in the fourth frame.
While MHB had more plays (68-54) Vikings coach Travis Rohrer felt the Beavers made more plays.
"They made more plays than us, it's that simple," Rohrer said. "Everything that went right for us the week before went wrong for us Friday night and we weren't able to overcome our mistakes."
"Reedsburg does an excellent job running the option and it requires everyone on defense to do their job and their job only," continued Rohrer. "We didn't do that on every snap and they made us pay."
Meylor was 20 for 39 passing for 207 yards with six of the tosses going to Laube for 73 yards.
"He plays like he practices and it shows up on Friday nights," Rohrer said about Laube's receiving.
"Meylor was the leading rusher with 71 yards on 14 carries while the Beavers held Matt Blome to 48 yards on 14 tries.
"Part of it was the situation of the game and us fighting to come back and the other part is that they have a very stout defensive front and took away our inside run lanes," said Rohrer.
Drew Archie and Bryce Arneson both recovered fumbles but they led to possessions instead of scores.
"We did not capitalize on all of our takeaways and that was the difference in the ball game Friday night," Rohrer said.
The loss causes some adjustment to the way the final two games of the regular season with Baraboo and Sauk Prairie will be approached.
"From this point on we are viewing this next one in Baraboo as the start of the playoffs," Rohrer said. "We need to focus on getting better each and every day this week in practice and finishing the week with a win against a solid Baraboo team. Their record is not a true indication of their talent on both sides of the ball."
