Eagle girls open with win

Even being in foul trouble didn't keep NCAA Division 1 recruit to Nebraska Hannah Whitish from leading her Barneveld girls basketball team to a 61-34 win over Lancaster in the Eagles' season opener. She finished the night with seven three pointers and 26 points.
Their originally scheduled opener with Oregon was snowed out last week.
Whitish sat a good share of the first half in foul trouble, so enter into the picture her cousin, Mia.
Mia scored 13 of her 15 points in the first half to help the Eagles to a modest 34-24 lead.
"Mia really stepped up for us in the first half," said Barneveld Assistant Coach Chris Thousand.
"When Hannah was in there she really was hitting," he added.
The Eagles committed 28 fouls on the night, but nobody reached the foul limit.
Lancaster shot 42 free throws, but only connected 22 times.
"We played aggressive defense," Thousand added. "The refs were calling a lot of hand checks that we were guilty of. We had a lot of kids in foul trouble but nobody fouled out. It's early in the season and we have to work on that."
The Eagles play host to Mineral Point next Tuesday night.
