Dodgers top Pointers in OT

When the neighboring communities of Dodgeville and Mineral Point meet in any sport, anything can happen.
Earlier this year in football Mineral Point staged a come from behind victory.
Friday night the two schools met in girls basketball - the second game for Dodgeville and the first for Mineral Point. That game went into overtime before the Dodgers came away with a 51-45 win.
The Pointers jumped to an early lead thanks to the shooting of senior Clara Chambers, who hit their first nine points.
The Dodgers came back led by sophomore Hannah Jones and junior Kara Crowley to take the lead at 14-12 midway in the first half (high school teams play halves this year instead of quarters). They held the advantage at halftime at 21-16.
Their lead stood up until about the 4:00 mark of the game when Pointer junior Cassie Bossert scored the last of her team's six straight points and a two point lead.
The lead went up to four and the Pointers were up 42-40 with just over 10 seconds left.
That's when Crowley hit a runner for the Dodgers and the game went into overtime tied at 42.
Chambers quickly put the Pointers up right away, but after the Dodgers tied it, on a basket by Megan Pluemer, they were able to close it out with free throws by Jones, Crowley and Pluemer while holding the Pointers to just one free throw.
Chambers led all scorers with 24 points, including four three pointers and all three points in overtime. Bossert added 11.
The Dodgers were paced by Jones with 17 points, including hitting two of four free throws in the extra period.
Crowley added 16 that included a pair from downtown and three of four free throws in the extra period.
Pluemer was the third Dodger to hit double figures. She had 11 that included a bucket and going 2x2 from the free throw line after regulation.
"Dodgeville had played a game this season and we hadn't and the first-game jitters showed with us,' said Mineral Point coach Mitch Wainwright. "We missed way too many lay ups and shots in the paint and we only were 6 for 12 from the free throw line."
He added, "We weren't patient offensively when we had the lead. We just made too many mistakes."
He said it didn't help either that 6'3" senior Jessica Schultz was not available as she is coming back from a partial ACL tear.
"She definitely could've been the difference maker tonight," he pointed out.
Dodgeville coach Mark Dooley said, "This game was one of two teams that just hustled and both left everything out on the court. Mineral Point has a great ball club. Clara (Chambers) and Syd (Staver) are very good ball players and good kids. And their role players know their jobs.
"Tonight, against a good defensive team, I thought we showed our potential better than at Evansville. We also played a decent defensive game.
"Our girls didn't quit and when we got down four we didn't panic. We played a little out of control at times, but we exhaled and found our way back."
He mentioned that Cushman hit a big three pointer for them and that Bauer was strong on the boards.
