Be tough, not stupid

By Kayla Barnes-kbarnes@thedodgevillechronicle.com

State governors from 27 states have refused to allow Syrian refugees into
their homes. These people have lost their homes and the lively hoods because
ISIS rebels, fighters and terrorists have destroyed everything. Eleven million
people have fled Syria to get away from the demanding ways of ISIS. We
have heard in the news that many have gone by boat to different countries
and we have heard about the many that did not make it. It has been discussed
to allow 10,000 refugees to enter into the United States next year.
People are afraid to let the refugees in because of the attacks on Paris this
past Friday night that left close to 130 people dead and over 350 injured. One
of the terrorists was able to cross into France, disguised as a Syrian refugee.
That seems to be the main reason these governors do not want to allow the
refugees into their states.
I understand where they are coming from. They are scared. There was just
a big attack and now ISIS (like they always have been saying) are threatening
to harm the United States. But we don't need to be racist and stereotyping
here. Did all of those refugees bomb Paris? Did they all have a part in it?
Most likely not. I agree on what Democratic Presidential Candidate Bernie
Sanders had to say on the situation. He stated, "During these difficult times
as Americans, we will not succumb to racism. We will not allow ourselves
to be divided and succumb to Islamophobia. We gotta be tough, but not stupid."
There are hundreds of thousands of people who have nothing left but
the shirts on their backs.
This is not the first time something like this has happened. Between 1975
and 1997 more than 1.6 million Vietnamese were evacuated and close to
410,000 resettled in our states. Now I understand that that situation was different.
We were in a war and they were fleeing a communist, terrorist group.
Wait, doesn't that sound familiar? And there were close to 130,000 people
we helped in just one year. With all the technology we have now and the security
systems we have, don't you think we would be able to handle 10,000
with doing background checks and double, even triple checking to make sure
that they will not harm us?
