Jones shuts out Hornets

Dodgeville catcher Allison Dougherty gave her pitcher, Nicole Jones, all the runs she would need with a two-run homer in the first inning Thursday in an 8-0 SWC win over Richland Center.
Dougherty's blast followed a lead-off single by Kara Crowley.
The Dodgers would score twice more in the second frame when Hannah Sigg singled and moved to second on Kara Crowley's sacrifice and scored on Dougherty's single. Dougherty then would score on a single by Alicia Benson for a 4-0 lead.
Two more runs came home in the fifth after Karley Ross singled and Dougherty waked with a Kelsey Prochaska single plating both.
The final two scored in the sixth when Ashley Chitwood singled, Samantha Crowley walked and both scored on Kara Crowley's single.
The Dodgers had 12 hits with Kara Crowley, Dougherty, Benson and Paige Lee each getting two. Prochaska, Chitwood, Sigg and Ross had one each.
Jones struck out four, walked one and scattered three hits on the day. The Lady Hornets had runners get as far as third only once in the contest - in the fourth following the Dodgers lone error, a hit and a passed ball with one out. But Jones coaxed two pop outs to end that threat.
"We really didn't play a great game, but we played a good game," said Dodger coach Gene Van Dyck. "Nicole threw five innings of the best ball she has thrown all year. She was backed by a really solid defensive effort led by a number of really good plays by Sam Crowley (2nd base) and Ashley Chitwood (1st base)."
"Allison Dougherty's first inning home run led us and eight of our nine starters had hits," he added. "We did have our downside in that we had too many strikeouts with runners in scoring position and less than two outs. Regardless it was a really solid win."
