Dodger softball wins Mount Horeb tournament

Dodgeville's softball team claimed the championship at the Mount Horeb Tournament Saturday for the second time in two years.
They whipped host Mount Horeb 7-1 and then got by Barneveld 5-4,
Against the Vikings they scored once in the third and then three times in the fifth twice in the sixth and once in the seventh.
Samantha Crowley walked, advanced on a single by Kelsey Prochaska and scored when Ashley Chitwood was safe on a fielders choice.
She scored again in the fifth as did Prochaska, who singled again and Chitwood, who also singled. Jordyn Alfred and Allison Dougherty had big hits in that frame.
Kara and Samantha Crowley both walked and scored in the sixth with a Chitwood single and Alicia Benson double doing the damage.
Dougherty walked, stole second and scored on Samantha Crowley's single for the final tally.
Kara and Samantha Crowley, Prochaska and Chitwood each had two hits with Benson, Hannah Sigg, Alfred and Dougherty each getting one.
Prochaska worked a complete game. She struck out six without a walk while allowing one run on six hits.
Lexi Hellenbrand was 2x3 for the Vikings.
Lexi Massman struck out three, waked two and gave up seven runs (3 earned) on 12 hits.
Runs came in bunches for the Dodgers against the Eagles as they scored twice in the third and three times in the sixth.
Kara Crowley singled to lead off the third and scored on Benson's double. Benson later scored on Dougherty's single.
Alfred led off the sixth with a walk, Dougherty singled and Paige Lee was safe on a fielders choice to plate Alfred. Both Dougherty and Lee scored on Katie Cushman's single.
Kara Crowley and Dougherty both had two hits while Benson, Lee and Karley Ross each had one.
Nicole Jones took the mound win striking out two, walking 10 while giving up four runs (2 earned) on eight hits.
Barneveld took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning as Hannah Owens led off and was safe on an error. She scored on a single by Amanda Roberts.
They scored two more times in the third as Owens singled, Jessica Walker sacrificed and was safe on an error and Brooklyn Hogan followed with a single to plate them both.
Their final run came in the fifth when Walker singled, but was out at second on a fielders choice with Roberts safe at first. Consecutive singles by Hogan and Jenna Wright plated Roberts with the fourth run.
Hogan had two hits with Owens, Walker, Roberts, Wright, Natalie Elfering and Liz Skaife each having one.
Roberts took the loss striking out six, walking two and allowing five runs (4 earned) on six hits.
"Against Mount Horeb, we started slowly at the plate as their pitcher was a little slower than what we have been seeing but starting the second time through we started hitting really well," said Dodger coach Gene Van Dyck.
"The game probably would have been shortened by the 10 run rule except for their outfield play which turned out to be really good. They cut down one of our runners at home and another at 3rd. Both plays were extremely close and I thought that in both cases we were safe but as it turned out we weren't. In another instance with the bases loaded and no outs, we got the wrong number of outs from the umpire and ended up in a double play and lost some runs. But we went to play and playing 7 innings was good for us. Particularly nice was to see the first 4 hitters in the line-up each with 2 hits. I thought that Kelsey Prochask-a and Samantha Crowley looked particularly good.
"On defense, we played our first error free game of the season and looked sharp all the way around.
"Kelsey threw by far the best ball she has thrown all year as she had command of all 3 of her pitches for almost the entire game. Mt. Horeb has been scoring a lot of runs all year but Kelsey really kept them under control," he concluded,
"Then Barneveld played a lot better game than when we faced them earlier in the year. In particular their pitcher threw much better," he said.
"But as happens in most close fast pitch game, the outcome is decided on mistakes and Barneveld made more than we did. I was somewhat disappointed in our overall hitting performance but it may have been the result of the difference between the Mt. Horeb pitcher and Barneveld's pitcher. It took us far too long to get on her. Allison Dougherty and Kara Crowley both had good games at the plate and Alicia Benson's double provided the spark that we needed to get going.
"After she settled down Nicole Jones ended up throwing a good game. We had a couple of errors that hurt but still over all played pretty decent ball," Van Dyck pointed out.
