Pointers edge SW, lose to CC


The Pointer softball team split a pair of SWAL decisions this past week, both in exciting fashion.
Thursday, Southwestern came to town and Mineral Point protected its home turf with an 8-7 conference victory.
The lead changed nine times. After the Pointers took the lead in the sixth, they held on for good as Kayla Lindholm crossed the plate.
The Wildcats made it interesting in the seventh, tallying two runs in the top of the inning on a two run single by Rachel Mueller, but couldn't get the tying run across the plate.
Savannah Lawinger came up with the victory, striking out one, walking two, and giving up 12 hits. Only three of the Wildcat runs were earned.
Clara Chambers and Megan Blume had hot bats, teaming up for seven hits and five RBIs.
Chambers had a solo homer in the fourth and Lindholm had one of her own in the fifth.
The Pointers got off to a hot start, tallying two runs in the first. Chambers doubled and was moved to second on a groundout by Jena Pilling. Lindholm then singled to plate Chambers. She was then sent home on a groundout by Blume.
For the Wildcats, Katie Fritz went 3x4 on the day with three singles and Hannah Hinman was 2x4 with two singles and an RBI. The visitors outhit the Pointers 12-9 on the day.
Chambers was 3x4 with a single, double, and home run and an RBI. Lindholm went 2x3 with a single and a homerun and two RBIs. Blume was 2x4 with two singles and two RBIs. Elise Ames added two RBIs of her own and Destinee Kruser one.
Monday, Cuba City rallied for a 6-5 win in Mineral Point.
The Cubans jumped out to an early lead in the first, 2-0. They got things going when Marti singled and stole second. Trevathan scored on an RBI single by Wiederholt.
Highlights for the Pointers were a solo home run by Kruser in the second and a two run blast by Lindholm in the fifth. Blume also knocked one out of the park.
Three runs on two singles gave the Cubans the victory in the top of the seventh.
Lawinger took the loss for the hosts, allowing six runs, one free pass, and fanned four.
Wiederholt got the win for Cuba City, allowing two walks, six hits, and striking out seven.
Blume was 2x3 at the plate with a double and a home run.
For the Cubans, Pustina was 2x3 with two singles, Marti went 3x4 with three singles and an RBI, Trevathan was 2x4 with two singles and three RBIs, and Wiederholt was 2x4 with two singles and an RBI.
