Hannah Whitish, Eagles in can't miss mode

When Barneveld's all-time scoring leader Rachel Slaney walked out on the basketball court at the Resch Center three years ago for the first time she wasn't sure she could keep her breakfast down.
"I felt like I might have to throw up," Slaney said.
Now a senior and playing in the Division 5 State Tournament for the third straight year the butterflies are gone.
But watching the Golden Eagles fly past Fall River 66-34 in the first game of the tournament and earn a shot at a second straight championship the butterflies may not have left the building. They just found a new home.
Kelly Tramburg, a 5'11" junior forward for the Pirates, thinks the butterflies might have found a spot to settle in the Pirates locker room,
"This is our first time here and it was an unbelievable experience but Barneveld knew what to expect and we didn't," she said after emerging as the leading scorer for the Pirates with 10 points. "But this will help us prepare for next year."
The Pirates start five juniors who won a state tournament when they were seventh graders.
"They are hungry,"said coach Jim Doolittle. "They will want to make it back."
The Pirates had little chance in this game with the two-pronged attack mounted by Barneveld junior Hannah Whitish and Slaney. The supporting cast was not too bad either.
Perhaps Doolittle described Hannah Whitish's shooting the best when he said, "I had to look to see if her hand was smoking."
Slaney got the first basket of the game then Whitish fired in 13 points the first quarter as the Eagles climbed to a 26-8 lead and eight more the second frame when they scored 19 to take a 45-16 lead at the half.
Hannah Whitish finished with 25 points and Slaney 15. The duo complimented their scoring with the rest of the things needed for a complete game effort.
Hannah Whitish had eight rebounds, six steals, four assists and one blocked shot. Slaney grabbed five rebounds, had two steals and two assists.
"I saw her that hot once before," said coach Jim Myers about Hannah's shooting. "She set a school record that time and she couldn't miss."
Missing was not the order of the day this time either as she made 10 of 15 shots with a five for eight from three point range.
There were other contributions for the Eagles in the win.
Sophomore Mia Whitish had nine points and took a pass from her cousin, Hanna, and followed it by putting in a three pointer at the buzzer that ended the first quarter.
"She'll go off for 20 one of these games," Myers said.
Senior Maggie Oimoen came off the bench and dominated the middle with eight points, three boards and a pair of in-your-face blocks.
Mattie Schave fired in a three pointer and dished out four assists.
Kelsee Fargo had a dominating defensive game with a ton of tipped balls and sneaked in from the baseline for six points while passing for two assists and stealing the ball twice.
Myers also said senior Amanda Roberts came in and played well for the Eagles.
Before it was over Myers had seen to it that all 15 girls got court time.
The second half was slower paced but Myers had scaled back the pressure by then.
"We wanted it to be cleanly played," he said. "We didn't want things to get sloppy."
The win advances the Eagles to the championship game for the third straight year at 11:05 Saturday. It will also be the third straight year the opponent will be Wisconsin Rapids Assumption.
The Royals are the only team this year to cause a mark in the right hand column of the 26-1 Eagles. Three years ago the Royals tipped the Eagles 39-35 and last year the Eagles came out with a 38-34 win. This will be the rubber match.
"It seems every time we play each other we have a close battle," Myers said.
The Royals win earlier this year was by one, 52-51.
The Eagles wouldn't mind a duplication of the first half against Fall River, though.
"That first half was as good as it gets," said Myers.
