River Valley drops Dodgers out of tournament running
For the River Valley boys basketball team the third time was a charm as they came away from #1 Dodgveville's home court with a 58-42 win and a Division 2 Regional Championship plaque.
The Blackhawks got started on the first play of the game as Beau Solomon made a runner from the side, Lucas Price got his own rebound and put it back in and Brandon Gilbeck made one of two free throws for a 5-0 lead.
The Dodgers came back as a three pointer by Trent Jones put them ahead 10-7 before RV's Tanner Gruber's lay-in ended the period at 10-9.
The game went back and forth with the Dodgers holding their final lead at the 2:21 mark on a bucket by freshman Bryce Prochaska at 19-18.
Buckets by Hunter Schwingle, Gruber and a free throw by Schwingle made it 23-19 at halftime.
The Dodgers got to 25-24 when Levi Nagel made a pair of free throws following a Jordan Larson three, but Gilbeck took over for the Blackhawks from there.
He went on to score 22 of his game-high 27 points in the second half and fed his 6'7" counterpart Gruber from the high post - for eight easy points.
River Valley led 40-28 after three and outscored the Dodgers 18-14 down the stretch.
Gilbeck dominated the inside with 27 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists and blocked two shots.
Gruber added 12 points, had six rebounds and five assists.
The Blackhawks shot 44% from the field on two pointers and were 1/9 from downtown.
They had 21 defensive rebounds and 14 offensive boards.
The Dodgers totaled 25 rebounds on the day and shot a mere 32% from the field.
Jones led their scorers with 13 points with Nagel next at 9.
"I thought we executed our game plan the last two times we played. The outcome this time was just different," said River Valley coach Luke Thatcher. "We caught Dodgeville on a night they weren't hitting - but I wasn't comfortable until the final buzzer as I know how they can put together runs."
"Everybody on their team pretty much focused on Brandon (Gilbeck) and Tanner (Gruber) was the beneficiary," Thatcher pointed out.
"Luke Price hit a big three for us when we needed it in the third," he went on saying. "We focused on what our jobs were and kept them from getting transition baskets and limited their three point shooting - but they still got down the court and made some big shots."
Dodgeville coach Ryan Bohnsack said, "Congratulations to the River Valley coaching staff and players. They executed a great offensive and defensive game plan."
He added, "In the first half we got the shots we wanted but couldn't find them in the second. Our shots seemed to get further from the hoop and nothing would drop."
About the 6'11" post player for River Valley he said, "I thought Brandon Gilbeck played like a 6'11" player should that is heading to play college ball. He was physical and took care of the ball. He helped to find his open teammates and they made plays."
"It is an upsetting loss for us as we all felt we deserved a victory," Bohnsack added. "We had great senior leadership this year and a tremendous supporting underclassmen group. As a coaching staff we are very proud of our team as they represented our community well."
