Eagle season ends at Shullsburg
The Miners start four players who are 6'3" to 6'8" while the Eagles tallest player stands 6'3".
But the game's outcome was in limbo right up until the end. The Eagles had a three point shot for a possible tie and then on to overtime that was right on, but hit the back of the rim and glanced off.
The Eagles played deliberate ball and led 5-0 right off and 10-9 at the close of the first quarter with Hunter Whitish burying a three pointer. Matthew Myers banked home a trey at the buzzer to give his team the one point advantage.
Miner Noah Wand lit it up for 11 first half points and helped his team to a 25-24.
The Eagles got the lead back at 31-30 on a three pointer by Colton Sullivan, but The Miners led 38-33 at the end of three.
Eagle sophomore Michael Zouski opened the fourth frame with two three pointers sandwiched around a Hunter Matye bucket for Shullsburg and the score stood 40-39 Miners.
Then the back and forth began.
Myers made a pair of free throws for Barneveld and they had the lead back 41-40. Miner Hunter Matye did the same on his end of the court for a 42-41 score.
Bryce Arneson stuffed back in a rebound for a Barneveld 43-42 lead.
A pair of buckets and a free throw on the Miner end made the score 47-43 with 1:51 left.
Then Myers cut it to 47-45 and then tied it with back to back buckets, but at the :50 mark Miner Brett Matye went coast to coast on a fast break.
Zouski made it 49-48 when he made one of two free throws and Brett Matye made two charity tosses at :21 for a 51-48 Miner lead.
Myers was fouled in a scramble for a loose ball and made both free throws and the Eagles were back within a point at 51-50.
Brett Matye was fouled at :10 and sank another pair for a 53-50 lead and then knocked the ball out of bounds with :02.5 left disrupting the Eagle play.
Barneveld coach Mike Whitish called time out to set up a play.
Everyone ran to one side of the court except Hunter Whitish who was open at the top of the key - but his shot was just long and glanced off the back of the rim.
Myers finished the night the game's top scorer with 18. Brycen Sorensen added 10.
Shullsburg had four reach double figures as Wand led with 13, Hunter Matye hit 12, 6'8" Joseph Meyer 11 and Brett Matye 10.
"Shullsburg is a good team. Their size intimated us," said Barneveld coach Whiish. "We didn't take care of the ball like we should have. We average nine turnovers and had 14 tonight. That gave them five more opportunities to score then we usually allow."
"We drew them out early, but to their credit they made adjustments and made it tough on us," he added. "This was a great experience for our young guys, but tough on our seniors. But I'm proud of these guys they never gave up. I'm proud of the way we finished."
