May has record setting gymnastics day
The All Around feat also holds true for when Dodgeville was alone in the program.
The Mineral Point freshman scored a school record 34.725 at the Division 2 Mount Horeb Sectional Saturday to finish only behind two Mount Horeb premier gymnaasts - seniors Sarah Duff and Lauren Faust (37.1 and 36.925).
The Dodge-Point team finished just three points out of second place - competing without another talent gymnast in junior Tori Palzkill who is injured.
Team scores (with the top two going on to state) were: Mount Horeb 1142.125, Platteville/Bel-mont/Lancaster 128.575, Milton 128.35, Southwestern/Cuba City 127.05, Dodgeville-Mineral Point 125.625, Monona Grove 125.125, Jefferson 122.175, Elkhorn Area 117.725, Whitewater 116.625.
For her record setting total, May turned in individual event scores of 8.95 (5th) on floor, 9.0 (3rd) on balance beam, 8.05 (18th) on vault and 8.725 (3rd) on uneven bars.
Another Dodge-Point freshman - Alyssa Belling - placed 15th overall out of 34 in All Aruond. She had scores of 7.85 on floor (21st), 8.0 on beam (18th), 8.225 on vault (13th) and 7.775 on bars (14th).
Dodge-Point senior Miranda Weber was 22nd in All Around placing 15th on beam with 8.1, 14th on floor at 8.15, 36th on bars with 6.375 and 38th on vault at 7.35.
Junior Claire Polinag was 31st in All Around at 28.0. She was 15th on beam with 8.1, 39th on floor at 7.1, 39th on bars at 5.8 and 41st on vault with 7.0.
Senior Winndie Darrow finished 32nd in All Around with 25.5. She was 45th on beam at 5.55, 35th on floor with 7.325, 42nd on bars at 4.775 and 25th on vault with 7.85.
"It was a bitter sweet meet, full of tears; Both of joy and sorrow. We said goodbye to two of our beloved gymnasts, seniors Miranda Weber and Winndie Darrow," said Dodge-Point coach Julia Oellerich. "Miranda will be attending UW-Milwaukee in the fall to pursue a degree in Biomedical Sciences. Winndie will be attending UW-Stevens Point to pursue a degree in Wildlife Ecology and Accounting. Both of these girls have been true leaders on our team, showing tremendous amounts of support and guidance to their teammates throughout their gymnastics careers. Both will be truly missed."
"The tears of joy came as we watch Lauren May complete the routines of her career, to advance to the State Competition on beam, bars, floor and also in the All-Around competition," she added. "This is a huge feat for any level of gymnast, but Lauren comes to us as a freshman, new to high-school gymnastics this year."
Oellerich also said, "All of the girls put forth a tremendous effort, placing 5th as a team, scoring a 125.625. It was a record breaking day, as this was our highest team score of the season and just .325 points shy of the All-Time School Record for the highest team score, set by the 1998-1999 team. Lauren May beat the All-Time School Record on floor with an 8.95 (a personal best), outscoring the 8.75 record set by Mary Marmorstone. Lauren also beat Marmorstone's record in the All-Around competition, scoring 34.725 points which is a personal best for her as well.
"The girls definitely had their best balance beam performance of the season. Claire Polinag (8.1), Miranda Weber (8.1), Alyssa Belling (8.0), and Lauren May (9.0) all had personal bests on beam scoring 33.2 points as a team. Todd, Annette, and I are very proud of this team. They have continued to progress throughout the season, despite injuries and tough competition. This team has a bright future in front of them! Now, we will be working extremely hard with Lauren to prepare her for the State Individual Competition, which takes places this Saturday in Wisconsin Rapids."
