Knights find way to win in 12th inning


The Dodgeville Knights made the most of their stable of pitchers and earned a 4-3 extra inning win over the Oregon Orioles in a Western Section Home Talent League game Sunday.
The Knights had to fight from behind to pull off the win which came in the bottom of the 12th thanks to an error and a clutch hit.
Veteran Mark Ludwig led off with a ground ball the third baseman threw past the bag at first. He took second on the play with Danny Sullivan coming to the plate.
Sullivan came through with a sharp grounder that eluded the Oregon second baseman and send Ludwig home with the winning run.
The Knights took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Austin Larson deposited a double to left and scored on Sullivan's single.
Oregon tied it in the fourth on an error, a sac bunt and a single by Eric Engler.
The Orioles went ahead 3-1 with a pair of runs in the sixth. Galloway singled and stole second then came home on a single by Sam Schrenthelar. He advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a fielders choice.
The Knights got one back in the eighth when Larson singled and scored on a bases loaded walk.
They tied the game with a clutch run in the ninth. Tony DeMuth hustled out a ground ball for a single, advanced on an error and scored on Ludwig's single.
Ludwig and Sullivan then combined on the game winner.
Larson, Ludwig and Sullivan were all 2x6. Austin Yager was 3x4 while DeMuth and Ian Streeter both had one hit.
Nic Pierick went six strong innings for the Knights. He spaced three hits, gave up three runs, two earned while fanning four and walking one.
Sullivan then went five innings, his longest stint of the season. He pitched hitless ball while fanning five and walking two.
Yager worked the 12th and got the decision. He gave up a hit, walked two and fanned one.
The Knights are at Barneveld Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. where they will host Lodi. It was moved due to the Ohio Valley Regional Babe Ruth games being played at Centennial Park in Dodgeville that night.
Sunday they host Shullsburg-Benton at 1 p.m.
