Dodgeville Senior Babe Ruth wins a pair


Dodgeville's Senior Babe Ruth team closed out its season with a pair of wins at the Pecatonica tournament Saturday after falling short with a late rally to Muscoda Wednesday.
A double header with Richland Center Friday ended up to be an hour long scrimmage as the summer Hornets were short of players.
Against Muscoda the Dodgers played catch-up the entire game before losing 12-7.
The Dodgers faced a 12-2 deficit in the fifth and were close to having the game ended by the 10 run rule. But, Jordan Larson reached first when his hard hit grounder to short was misplayed, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on another error by the summer Chieftains. That made it 12-3.
The Dodgers made a strong comeback attempt in the seventh. Riley Glonek coaxed a walk to lead off the inning and Zack Weber followed with a single. Hunter Gerke's single loaded the bases and Jordan Olson sent in a pair of runs with a hit.
A fielders choice and three straight walks made it 12-7 before a pair of strikeouts ended the game.
Jordan Olson and Zack Weber both took mound turns for the Dodgers.
The Dodgers had five hits, all singles, from Weber, Gerke, Olson, Larson and Matt Gorgen.
At the Pecatonica tournament the Dodgers faced Highland in the opener and won a hard fought game 6-5.
The Dodgers scored early with a run in the first and four in the second. They scored the eventual game winner in the fourth.
Highland got a run in the fourth, three in the sixth and one in the seventh before Jordan Olson closed the door with a strikeout.
Cole Sullivan got the win with six strong innings of work. He fanned eight, walked three and spaced four hits.
Olson gave up a hit, fanned one and walked one in his one inning of work to record the save.
A hit by Sullivan and a balk led to the first Dodgeville run then Olson's single brought Sullivan home.
Four walks, two errors and a bunt single by Junior Larson helped the Dodgers score four in the second.
The final run came on a hit by Gerke, a stolen base, a single by Sullivan and a double play.
Nate Robinson doubled to open the fourth for Highland and scored on a double by Austin Yager.
Yager later doubled in a three run Highland sixth and Evan Rusch singled.
The Cardinals added a run in the seventh before Olson ended the game on a strikeout.
The championship game went three innings before it was ended by rain. The Dodgers were leading 3-1 at the time over Pecatonica.
Olson stayed on the mound for the second game and gave up a run on three hits. He struck out five, walked one and hit one.
Brooks Chandler doubled to open the fourth and scored on a single by Jake Dearth for Pecatonica's run.
The Dodgers used four walks and a two run single by Karter Zacijek for a pair of first inning runs.
They added a third in the second on a hit by Sullivan which got past the right fielder, a wild pitch and a single by Olson.
Gerke, Sullivan and Olson had Dodgeville's three hits.
